Theory greatly influences outcomes because it serves as a basis for evidence based practicee implementation. As such, outcomes can be predicted and measured. According to Yoder- Wise (2011) there are specific leadership characteristics/skills necessary for any theory to be effective in the health care setting. These include the ability to communicate effectively without prejudice, develop participant observational skills and be an excellent role model or desired out comes (Yoder – wise, 2011).
Complexity theory covers a wide range of disciplines including health care. As such, its definition is somewhat complex depending on the discipline to which it is applied. Yoder-Wise (2011) perceives complexity theory as a set of assumptions used to manage difficult intriguing situations, especially, on the job. Further, it was emphasized that theory is important to leadership because it serves as a foundational guide through, which practice is executed. In its application to nursing science and practice complexity theory under girds interpretation of many assumptions created in emotional intelligence theory according to Yoder-wise (2011) (Yoder-wise, 2011).
For example, in my role at this time complexity theory is very useful because it is non- traditional. This means in its applicability to nursing management, complexity theory offers solutions towards effectively addressing a diverse intergenerational workforce with all its values and attitudes differences. Health systems reform also forges a new way of perceiving leadership and the workforce, generally. Therefore, the assumptions offered in complexity theory is valuable to me at this point of my career development.
In discussing how the definition of leadership/ management and follower changes in complexity theory compared to the basic definitions given in the beginning of the chapter is to highlight the non-traditional nature of complexity theory. Traditionally, leadership means instructing subordinate staff under complexity it is more modeling the behavior desired to be inculcated. What is done has greater effect than that which is said. Managing again takes on a modern dimension encouraging and awarding incentives rather than harsh discipline measures at the onset. Following is transformed into a cohesive team building effort whereby subordinate staff collaborates with management and leaders in bringing forth favorable outcomes. No longer are they excluded from the decision making process by simply confirming to orders of the administration. Following becomes an inclusive process.
Networking is a very important strategy in modern business management. According to Yonder-Wise (2011) they enhance the organizations function because leaders/managers can lear from other non healthcare organizations ( Yoder-Wise, 2011). Ideas are applicable across disciplines and through networking with firm that sell hospital equipment the organization could reduce operational costs which could allow more access to care . At the individual level a pateint might be able to afford a certain type of treatment just because administration secured the most appropriate networking group to facilitate the process. Groups such as pharmaceutical companies and industries that supply health caree equipment are great for hospital organizations.
Non-hierarchical interactions are excellent in supplementing the democratic process within any organization. As a manager, it can be used to transmit information concerning changes in patient care protocols that would affect staff functioning, but improve outcomes. Alternatively, non- hierarchal interactions cannot be used if it is a case of medical malpractice or any other threat to patient security. Maintaining privacy is important. Therefore, hierarchical interactions are mandatory.
The “tag”/ “label” of leadership is a philosophy similar to branding a product whereby the organization’s focus is remarkably unique and is used as an attractor for the business. For example, ‘Excellent equitable healthcare for all in home like setting.’ Once a client sees this tag or label immediately a connection to the organization appears being welcoming to everyone and care is above average. This concept can drastically change outcomes because people do not want to be hospitalized if it becomes necessary. The sight of nurses and equipment is frightening. Therefore, letting clients know that the environment would be like home is an excellent attractor for more clients who are eligible for service.
The focus on “emergence” relates to how people in leadership positions interact, explore and learn through participating within the organization. This is a human gregarity principle whereby man’s gregarious nature is beneficial. In collaborating, interacting and bounding a new element of the person’s character is born. It can be used within the top management circle as well as among various categories of employees For example; team work could ignite such passion among employees that their best skills begin to surface. As a management technique, the emergence principle can be used as a motivator to improve work performance among sluggish employees.
Thinking systematically in nursing management refers to moving beyond the specific clinical setting such as the medical /surgical unit to think about a situation as affecting the entire organization, the whole hospital. For example, if a patient on one unit has a concern about services; it should be perceived as a hospital function to correct and not simply a unit issue. Essentially if a pateint experiences difficulty communicating with a particular healthcare provider due to his/her accent on the surgical unit it must be addressed from an ofganizational level because while it surfaces in the surgical unit first, patients across other units could have the same problem, but do not know how to express it.
