Zoom Key Challenges: Data Privacy and Security Concerns

Zoom was formally introduced to most people in the world during the onset of COVID – 19 when most countries initiated lockdowns and asked citizens to stay at home. Consequently, People had to see their loved ones and workmates through technology; therefore, Zoom came in handy (Aiken, 2020). However, with the growing technology and frequent upgrade of devices and people’s knowledge and skills about technology, the need for privacy and security protection rose as people want their information private. Trust levels with an unpopular technological device or company are low; people trust well-known, used, and tested companies. Just like any other form of technology, Zoom has had its fair share of data privacy and security issues but has managed to solve. For example, In 2020, key issues such as Zoom not having an end to end encryption arose, as Zoom employees were said to be able to access Zoom calls information, raising a crucial concern to its clients’ data privacy (Wagenseil, 2020).Furthermore, in a class-action lawsuit over data privacy, Zoom agreed to pay plaintiffs about $90 million for “zoombombing” or sharing personal information to third parties, signifying the need to create a stringent end to end encryption in the near future.

In the coming future (2022), security issues such hacking of webcams and outsiders accessing private information are a foreseen possibility. This is because hackers are already familiar with the system which has been out for long enough to hack. Also, competing companies are eagerly waiting for a slight privacy concern and watch as Zoom falls into ashes.

All of the problems mentioned above posed a significant threat to Zoom.

Regardless of the data privacy and security issues around Zoom, Zoom is seen to have managed to stay ahead of time by updating its application systems. Updating its software will help to detect and remove any threat or bug from the software hence making it safe for use (Wagenseil, 2020). In addition, Zoom has set to improve its control center where the security and data privacy matter will be frequently monitor and improved using the latest developer tools.
