1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens, Essay Example

Introduction

The subject of the two films, 1979’s  Alien and 1986’s  Aliens, is introduced.  Intent is established to demonstrate by contrast and comparison that this is a classic example of how even a well-executed sequel will intrinsically lack the creative vitality of the original.  Through a contrast of the first two Alien films, it can be seen that genuine creative freedom may only be manifested in an original film, as a sequel is essentially made to meet a largely financial demand.

The evolution of 1979’s  Alien was, as is the case with many potential film properties, marked by perpetual confusion, hesitancy, and studio and budget conflict. The fact that this was an original project allowed for creative freedom.  The film’s reception was excellent, rewarding the chances taken by the writers and director.

As is obvious, the Alien sequel was born, not from the inspiration of several film and graphic artists, but from the twin imperatives to seize a vastly profitable opportunity and to construct a follow-up as worthy of the original film as could be created.   This movie was created to meet a specific agenda, and largely a financial one.
