4 Ways Video Games Are Good for You, Essay Example

Essay

My personal research question that I’m interested in is why are playing video games good for you? I’m particularly interested in this topic because there is so much research that says that video games and playing them can provide a wealth of benefits that most people would not think they would. Interestingly enough, there are more benefits to playing a video game then not and what some people don’t realize is that even though playing video games can come off as immature or a waste of time, that video game is teaching someone something important or improving something. The facts that I know I’ll need for this is different perspectives on what video games can do to the human mind not to mention how much they improve the brain. One such article is by Diana Rodriguez (2015) where she explains that, “kids aren’t the only ones to benefit from playing video games, older people (age 42-60) and even senior citizens are reaping the benefits of playing video games. Older people feel younger and more youthful than ever before not to mention that it improves their memory 70%” (Rodriguez, 2015).

There are so many things that video games can do for the human mind and everyone needs that brain power upgrade to be able to do things like think outside the box, explore different ways of doing common everyday things like taking out the garbage or recycling. I would also research how video games have helped humankind since their invention to further support my thesis of how video games are the greatest good and good for you, discussing this further will also allow people to see that video games are the world’s greatest treasures.

Another reason why I want to explore this topic further is because playing video games have gotten a lot of bad press from people who have had children die playing video games and the parents, naturally, want to blame the video game instead of their child. Parents who are anti-video game have argued that all video games were designed to do is to enslave children and take away their sense of self, the video game is “enslaving” children. Ha! I won’t invest too much of my time in trying to pay attention to such sanctimonious garbage. I will also be exploring how video games can and have improved the human body, playing video games has helped people who have felt that they were never going to do certain things again like walk, actually walk. To help my research further, I’ll refer to the article by Drew Guarini (2013) who explains that, “video games have given people even stroke victims the return of their memories as well as their bodily functions, certain victims of body atrophy have found that they can use certain parts of their bodies that they couldn’t before” (Guarini, 2013).

I could say all day long that the only real reason that I’m choosing to research video games and their benefits is because I’m an avid video game player that’s been reaping the benefits of playing video games for years; which is true for all intents and purposes. However, I mainly chose this topic because who better to tell the story of how video games are the greatest thing to happen to the world since cavemen discovered fire than me. I also chose this topic because there are certain people that need to know the real truth behind playing video games and how good they are for you. I was playing Tomb Raider: Underworld for 7 hours yesterday and after I quit playing it, I did a crossword puzzle. I completed it under 2 minutes, and I felt like I could’ve kept going; I almost did!

In conclusion, the wealth of benefits of playing video games is the reason I chose this topic, video games help people but more importantly, help people live longer.
