Morgenroth, T., Sendén, M. G., Lindqvist, A., Renström, E. A., Ryan, M. K., & Morton, T. A. (2020). Defending the sex/gender binary: The role of gender identification and need for closure. Social Psychological and Personality Science, 1948550620937188.
Morgenroth et al (2020) believe that the sex/gender binary puts women in subordinating or complementary positions. De-gendering of language involves making gender/ sex non- binary. In short, it is not determined by physical characteristics considering that many individuals have different bodies that do not conform to the given binary measures. The author concludes that gender identification is often related to prejudice against non-binary people. Further policies that have sought to end gender categories have not focused on supporting the third category of gender. I chose this source because it entails crucial information that is significant in arguing for a gender-neutral language in society. This article will be applicable in outlining the presence of gender diversity such that there are non-binary, intersex, or gender-fluid individuals, all fighting for inclusion in Canadian society and throughout the world. Through the article, I will explain the importance of adopting changes in the language to promote social change and create a comfortable space for everyone.
Lillian, D. L. (2020). Rewriting Language: How Literary Texts Can Promote Inclusive Language Use by Christiane Luck (2020). Gender and Language, 14(3), 1-3.
From this article, Lilian (2020) argues that a gender-neutral language is crucial in society and therefore promotes the use of literary pieces to create social awareness of inclusivity. Society can effectively achieve a society that is alive to gender-inclusive language by engaging people in discourses that helps them to realize the need for the use of such a language. The article highlights an effective way that society can be able to bridge the gender gap by supporting gender-sensitive language. I chose this particular source to facilitate in showing how society can be sensitized towards gender issues. I will use it to expound on the importance of an inclusive language, especially in schools.
Popi?, D., & Gorjanc, V. (2018). Challenges of adopting gender–inclusive language in Slovene. Suvremena lingvistika, 44(86), 329-350.
According to Popi? & Gorjanc (2018), adopting a gender-neutral language is quite difficult, especially in some languages considering that they ignore pluralism. The author argues that the problem with gender-sensitive language is engraved in the culture of some communities. Therefore, changing this perspective has to first start by trying to change the culture of the people which is a very hard process. | The article is an excellent choice for communicating the difficulties present in adopting inclusivity. With this article, I can illustrate the challenges encountered during the adoption of the language change.
Surette, T. (2019). Too scared to teach: Secondary students’ insights into educators silencing and stigmatizing gender and sexual diversity in public schools in Alberta, Canada. Contemporary Issues in Education, 14(2), 33-49.
Surette (2019) suggests that a gender-neutral education can enable gender-fluid individuals to be more comfortable in their bodies. By focusing on educating young people to be more gender-sensitive at their early age then it can be possible to find a solution to the issues of genders. This is because educators can decide to shun the topic of gender diversity, making it difficult for these individuals to understand why they exist. I will use this article in the research to identify the problem of gender among young people. Through such an approach it would be much easier to solve the gender issues.
