Literature and poetry are closely interwoven. Literature is a description of creative, technical, or scientific written or spoken material. It particularly refers to the works of creative imagination by an individual. These works of imagination includes; fiction and nonfiction, drama and poetry. Literature and poetry have a place in the modern university. Nevertheless, it has been recently overshadowed by the analysis of non-literary pieces of text in the education cycles. However, its importance cannot be overshadowed. Literature and poetry enables the tutors to effectively teach students writing and reading skills and be able to understand any text. This can be achieved through narration of the poems and the in-depth analysis of the literary texts.

Students also learn the principles of grammatical writing. The learning of grammar in poem is achieved when analyzing what happens when poets strips some of the grammar conventions or pervert them for more effect. Literature and poetry evokes feelings and provokes students thoughts about complex social issues.This will enable students to address everyday life issues they encounter with an open mind as poetry and literature transforms the way students view normal issues into new perspectives.

Poetry, which is a work of literature, awakens student’s senses and helps them connect with their inner selves and to the others. It also leads the students to think in synthesizing way as aided by the use of metaphor. Self-reliance among the students is forged through the teaching of literature and poetry. The individualized interpretation and analysis of issues trains the students to rely on their point of views and therefore promotes independence of the students in many aspects.

Literature and poetry is known to promote deep discovery of new meanings from the in-depth synthesis of the literary texts and the conveying of information in an economized language like in poems. Students are therefore able to discover profound truths difficult to know in other works. In conclusion, literature and poetry has a place in modern universities and should be taught due its immense benefits to the students in sharpening their skills.
