A Remembered Event, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 450

Essay

Topic

Children do not really respond to big changes very well, especially when it comes to big changes in their environment. My first day of school was a memorable event, because it was a place I was not used to. Spending my first few years of life in a home I was comfortable in, and then having to change all that was a big shock. It did not occur to me at that time that this type of institution is where I’ll be spending years of my life in. My first day of school is an event which will remain with me for a long time, both in a good and a bad way.

Audience/Reader

Most people would be able to relate to this. They could directly associate the event with their own first day of school, or even just a big change in their life. As mundane an event as it is, everyone has their own different story to tell, and each interesting in their own way.

Purpose

The purpose of this essay would be to share a past event to an audience/reader in the form of a narrative. It can inform as well as entertain.

Scratch Outline

  • Introduction of the character
  1. Things the character liked to do before the event
  2. Where the character lived
  3. How old the character is
  • Going to school
  1. How school was explained to the character
  2. The character’s initial feelings about starting school
  • The people the character met
  • How the day ended
  1. How the character felt after the event
  2. Any life changing realizations the character had

Place

The essay will take place in the home, then will move to the school place. The environment plays a big role in the essay, since it will be the one which drastically changes.

People

When a child grows up from the infant to the toddler stage, the only people he/she would know are close by neighbors and his/her parent’s friends. Although when a child starts school, he/she will be introduced to so many different people which may be a good or bad thing for the child.

Significance

The significance of writing this essay is to show how shocking the first day of school might be for a child, but also it is a great experience. Children who are about to enter kindergarten really don’t know what to expect (Kendrick) but, no matter how long the event was, a child will always remember his/her first day of school.

Tentative Thesis Statement

Even though the child has unrealistic expectations about the first day of school, a big change in environment can be shocking for the child especially if the child has a vague idea about what school is.
