A Supplement for NYU, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 538

Essay

New York City has always been a city suitable for orators seeking to hone their eloquence and debate skills at a higher level. The urban setting in which NYU is located is quite appealing due to the fact that the campus is located within a political hubbub. I plan to major in political science as a first step towards pursuing a career in politics and public administration. NYU offers various study abroad and immersion programs, which I would like to do in order to experience politics and public advocacy in foreign countries.

NYU is a vibrant high education institution for students interested in public affairs and government, as the professors working in Wilf Family Department of Politics pride themselves in encouraging students to engage in scientific inquiry into politics in order to better foment a critical dialogue on political institutions in addition to enacting positive political changes. NYU values diversity and would provide a solid foundation for me to further advocate for those who lack the economic and/or political clout and resources needed to speak for themselves beyond just debating others on their behalf. At NYU, I plan to undertake courses that will fully satisfy my quest to understand the power of discourse and language within the political arena. I look forward to taking courses such as the Public Speaking course within the Department of Media and Communication and learning from world-renowned professors such as Professor Julia Evergreen Keefer, Valerie Purdie-Vaughns, Kenji Yoshino. NYU offers a variety of courses that examines how communication technologies and media are deployed to both mobilize and manipulate public values, political actions, and public opinion.

I am most excited about the prospect of being a member of the NYU Cross Examination Debate Team, which provides students the opportunity to practice their debate skills. Beside the challenges and learning that I expect, I would also embrace the team’s community outreach as I believe such community engagement is necessary in order to enact positive changes via the vehicle of debate.

The new Robert L. Bernstein Institute for Human Rights is an important driver behind making NYU my preferred school of choice. I am an ardent human rights supporter who wants to participate in grassroots movements to eradicate structural and institutional prejudices. The Institute offers me an unrivalled opportunity to further my interest in this area, learning from academics and professional including diplomats, policymakers, practitioners, and members of non-governmental organizations in an array of human rights issues ranging from poverty to armed conflicts abroad. It would be a dream for me to be able to have access to such incredible resources. I know that NYU will enable me to achieve my professional goals of become an activist and official within public administration.
