Beaudoin M. (2011). Hunting Witches in the ‘War on Terror’. Consortium News. Retrieved from https://consortiumnews.com/2011/11/01/hunting-witches-in-the-war-on-terror/
The author of this article notes that the country continues to engage in international affairs as if the September 11 attacks have just occurred. Because we constantly live in fear of such terror, we are not taking political actions that have a positive influence on our state of well-being. It is important to stop looking at so many groups as the enemy and to reassess our involvement in world affairs.
Gregory, A. (2013). The War on Terror Is a War on American Freedom. The Independent Institute. Retrieved from http://www.independent.org/newsroom/article.asp?id=4670
The author of this article poses the concept that the ability to fight terror has imposed some restrictions on American freedoms. This is evident from the added amount of security that Americans face when traveling using the airport in addition to new security checkpoints added on roads. While these measures have been put in place to help American safety, this raises the question as to whether these measures are really necessary.
Office of the Press Secretary. (2001). Address to a Joint Session of Congress and the American People. The White House. Retrieved from http://georgewbush- whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010920-8.html
In this press release, George W. Bush addresses the nation to demonstrate the strength that it has upheld despite the September 11 terrorist attacks. The president states that the country must remain strong and take action to prevent future occurrences. Ultimately, it is necessary to consider that without the actions taken by Bush, the nation would not currently be faced with many of the security measures that we are currently dealing with. It is therefore necessary to question whether this proposed solution to terrorism was an effective way of dealing with this problem.
Pilger J. (2004). Breaking The Silence: Truth And Lies In The War On Terror. Retrieved from http://johnpilger.com/videos/breaking-the-silence-truth-and-lies-in-the-war-on-terror
Some journalists believe that the “war on terror” was an excuse to send more troops to the Middle East to achieve the nation’s political goals. While there is certainly a clash of ideals between the two nations, journalists postulate that the September 11 attacks could have been avoided. It is important to discern the political motivations for the country’s involvement in the Middle East from reasons related to the terrorist attacks.
Van Buren P. (2014). How the ‘War on Terror’ Became a War on the Constitution. The Nation. Retrieved from http://www.thenation.com/article/180245/welcome-post-constitutional-America
This article notes how the “war on terror” became synonymous with anti-America. The United States is using the “war on terror” as a front to control the politics of nations around the world so that it can benefit. Overall, it is important to note that terrorism itself is not a threat to democracy and that the American reaction to this terrorism may be too extreme.
White JR. (2013). The Nature of Modern Terrorism. Huffington Post. Retrieved from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-r-white/confusion-about- boston_b_3128995.html
In the modern world, terrorism still exists and has many different forms. In particular concern is that much of this terrorism occurs due to past transfer of weapons to terrorist groups that are now being used against us. Modern politicians typically ignore the fact that we have equipped many terrorist groups that have targeted us by providing weapons to individuals in their regions to fight for democracy. These practices need to be ceased if the problem is to be solved.
