- Reading to your children
It important for a parent to set aside a time period within a day or by use of any regular other method in which he/she will read aloud to the children. Regular r4eading out to children has been found to produce favorable results in that children tend to improve in the reading of comprehension, understanding the various use of vocabulary and accurate decoding of words and phrases. This approach has been found to increase the children’s desire to uphold independent reading.
- Children to be surrounded with reading material
It has been found that the students who perform well in their schools are inmost cases those with a large collection or array of relevant material for reading at home. Parents should therefore endeavor to tempt their kids to read by placing various collections of appealing books in different corners of the house that are frequented by the children. These may include placing the reading material in places such as the bath rooms, cars, family rooms and bedrooms. One may also put such material by the TV so that when the child has watched the TV he /she can always think of reading as the next thing.
- It is important to have a family reading time
It is important fro the family to put aside about 20 to 40 minutes in which every member of the family will engage in silent reading. Whenever children see their parents reading they will get inspired to read eve more. It has been found that about 20 minutes of reading daily will no doubt increase their fluency in reading.
- Encourage reading activities that vary widely
It is important fro the parents to make reading practice in their children become an integral part. Encourage them the children to read such simple articles or documents such as menus, game directions, roadside signs, weather reports, listings for movies and any other relevant information during the day to day activities. It is also important for the parents to ensure that the children always have something to read especially when they are in their spare time. Such spare time includes when the children are waiting for appointments or when with the parents riding in the car.
- Develop the tendency to take children to the library
It is important for parents to develop the habit of enticing the children more by ensuring that the children carry out a visit to the library after every few weeks. This will enable them to get new reading material. Libraries are essential in improving the children’s reading power by offering some crucial reading programs that are suitable for children of all ages. These programs are good and always appealing to the children and will always have a resultant effect of increasing their reading interest further.
- Monitor children’s progress
The parents should be on the forefront of ensuring that they understand their children’s progress to ascertain if it is as expected. It is important to find out the various reading skills the children are expected to have when they reach a given grade level in their education. The good thing is that such information is readily available at the various schools or educational centers in which such students attend. Such monitoring can also be achieved by checking the various academic reports and the standardized test results.
- Try to detect reading problems earlier
Most people do not know that teachers detect reading problems in children only when they have become serious. This is mainly because of the many students one teacher handles in a classroom. This therefore means that the parents or guardians for that matter are in a better position to detect the reading problems in their children as early as possible. It is important for the parent to test and see if the children can sound out words clearly and if he or she can use a given context to clearly identify words that are unknown and if he or she can understand what they read clearly.
- In case of reading problems seek help
Contrary to a common notion that reading problems disappear magically it has been found to be true that the reading problems if not corrected as early as possible will always result in recurrent mistakes in child’s education. The earlier pupils or students receive help the more likely their reading skills will improve and make them good readers. It is therefore important to ensure that the children seek for help whenever they agree in need from the various instructors such as tutors, teachers or even from the learning centers.
1.0 Rationale Statement
The Success of children in the various activities they get involved in is highly dependent upon the support they receive from their parents or guardians. In as much as individual commitment or drive by every child contributes differently to the success of a child, the environment in which he/she grows has the greatest molding effect on the life of the child. It is therefore important for parents to take their relationship with the growing child seriously.
