The article addressed the challenges that African migrant families faces, which should be noted by family therapists to guide their work. The author applauds the importance of therapy professionals to b ethnically sensitive in offering psychological therapy to African migrant families in need. The research involved studying a sample of African immigrants to establish their main needs, where it was established that most families are in need of acceptance from the society. The article may be applied in designing effective therapy programs for African families in the US.

Daramola, O. (2004) Cognitive Representations in African Immigrant Women, Journal of College of Nursing, Vol. 1, Issue 2, p. 45.

This article focused on the experiences of the migrant women in the US, and best therapy modes that may be used to address their issues. The study was focused on a population of 91 Nigerian women in the US, where their lifestyle and thought patterns were measured through a questionnaire survey. It was found that most of these women experienced hypertension and mental problems due to poor lifestyle and pressures of life. This article may be applied in further research on experiences of African immigrant women in the US, and the best ways to address these issues.

Ballbe, M. (1997). A group art therapy experience for immigrant adolescents, American Journal of Art Therapy, Vol. 36, Issue 1 (Aug 1997): 11.

The article digs deeper into the experiences of African immigrant adolescents. The study went on to look at the feelings of adolescents that inhibited their ability for self-acceptance, awareness, and social assimilation. The study involved a 10-week questionnaire survey on the immigrant adolescents. The study found out that most of the African immigrant adolescents suffered from self-acceptance, awareness, and social assimilation problems, because of isolation from the nonimmigrant adolescents. The findings of this article may be applied in developing therapy solutions for African immigrant adolescents faced with such challenges.

Afoláyan, M (2000). African Immigrant Families in the United States: Surviving the Sociocultural Tide, American Journal of Psychiatry and Counseling, Vol. 1, Issue 2, p. 54-76.

The article focused on studying on the experiences that immigrants of African descent go through as they seek to settle down in the US, and the action psychological therapists can take to help them. The study involved conducting a questionnaire survey among African immigrants in Texas, and established that many had trouble in adapting to the life, due to poor education and socioeconomic challenges. Those who cannot afford education and good jobs often end up experiencing harsh life in a way to cope in the capitalist society. The finding may be applied by counselors who deal with these migrants in helping them have hope again and work ways to give a meaning to their lives.

This article explains the painful experiences that many of the African immigrant women face in the United States. The article studies the experiences of the immigrant women through conducting a survey among immigrant communities. The study found out that many women suffer from problems of domestic violence, and sexual abuse, yet such problems go unnoticed because of the stigma. The article findings may be applied in developing community action programs to address these issues among immigrant women in the American society.

Agbenyega, J. (2010). Early childhood inclusion for African immigrant children, International Journal of Whole Schooling, Volume 6, Issue 2, p. 46.

The issue of inclusion and exclusion for African immigrant children in quality schooling has been a matter of debate in the United States. This article has focused on studying the problem of exclusion of African immigrant children from quality schooling. The study investigated this through a questionnaire survey to immigrant parents in Chicago. It was found out that economic challenges, and high cost for enrolling to top schools excluded many children from quality education. The therapy to this problem may be to educate families on ways to add home schooling to formal schooling to improve performance. This article may be applied by family therapist for African immigrant families.

Wilfreda, T. (2003). Occupational injury among African immigrants, Journal of International Migration and Integration, Volume 4, Issue 1, pp. 105 – 123

This article focused on studying the growing populations of immigrants, and increased health problems, especially occupational health and safety issues. The study conducted through survey a population of African immigrant workers in California’s industries, established that many of these workers experienced occupational health problems. This is by virtue that most of them worked in lower carder jobs in the industries, which subjected them to poor work conditions risking their health. Therapist of African immigrant workers with health problem many apply this article in providing advice to the people.

Arnold & Fujishiro (2006) narrow down on the experiences that immigrant’s workers face in their work place, and related environmental & occupational health. The study collected data though a survey targeting industrial workers of African descent. The findings indicated that most of the immigrant workers experienced health problems due to environmental challenges at their workplace. It may be necessary for therapist to guide such workers on how to protect themselves from such industrial harms, making this article very useful in therapy.
