Essay

The DNP curriculum has helped me develop and advance my nursing practice to a completely new level. As an obstetrician, I feel that I am now prepared to take over the leadership role in a health care service delivery setting in my quest to improve the quality of care. Having completed the NR730 courses, I have acquired several foundational essentials for advanced nursing practice. For instance, the underpinning scientific foundation for nursing practice, the clinical scholarship, and the analytical method for evidence- based practice essential, has prepared me to develop and evaluate care delivery practices that meet current and future needs of customers based on scientific findings (Diers, 2005, p.29). Besides, I can now ensure accountability for the high quality health care services and patient safety.

The course has enabled me appreciate the role of health care policy. According to “AACN position statement on the practice doctorate in nursing”, health policy creates a framework that can facilitate, or hinder care delivery (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Health care policy influences multiple care delivery issues such as health disparities, health care financing, and ethical issues. In this regard, I am now capable of developing effective strategies for managing ethical dilemma, which is common in health care delivery, organization, and research. I am also in a position to employ effective communication skills in the development and implementation of the practice models, peer review, practice guidelines, standard care, health care, and scholarly products.

In realization that no individual can master all advanced roles and requisite knowledge for enacting these role, the program emphasizes on mastery of an area of nursing (Donaldson & Crowley, 2008, p.115). The program has prepared me to practice in my area of specialization, which is obstetrics while collaborating with other professionals. I can therefore lead an inter-professional team in the analysis of the complex practices, and organizational issues. In addition, I can employ consultative and leadership skills with intra professional and inter-professional teams to create change in health care and complex health care delivery system. As at now, my nursing practice prowess has developed tremendously, and I am looking forward to even more advancement.
