Improving the future of nursing through enabling force of magnetism

As a DNP prepared leader, it is possible to guide and make an organization to excel by creating a compelling vision, communicating the vision, as well as the plan. One can also enhance the facility’s performance by holding the nursing leaders accountable as magnet champions; demonstrate strategic thinking, and maintain the institution’s objectivity (George, 2005, p.120).

Nursing leadership is one of the crucial elements in attaining magnetic designation. It is the responsibility of a nursing leader to create a compelling vision for the future state of nursing practice within the organization. A good vision evokes positive responses among the nursing community in the organization. It is also important for leaders to articulate simple and clear plan on how to achieve the organization’s vision. After creating a compelling vision, the next step is to communicate the vision to all stakeholders (Harding, 2011, p.18). The leader should communicate the need to achieve the magnetic designation, and the benefits of magnetic designation. Furthermore, the leader should communicate the requirements of every stakeholder in order to attain magnetic designation.

It is important for the leader to consider a wide range of organizational accountability, regulation activity, and nurse specific actions when focusing on magnetic designation. In addition, the leader should maintain objectivity throughout the journey toward magnetic designation. It is important for leader to check whether the senior nursing leaders are performing as expected. Are they championing for magnetic designation? In this regard, one should check whether the leaders provide staff members with opportunities to participate fully in unit-based activities. Are clinical nurses aware of the clinical issues? Is the two-way communication sufficient? If something is not going as expected, the leader should act with speed to correct it. Attaining a magnetic designation is difficult and will take time, however, if the procedure above is followed, it can lead the organization to magnetic designation.
