About the Author
Dale Rogers Marshall is known far and wide around America for his idealisms and opinions regarding the development of the American politics. It could be analyzed that through comprehensive research and social observance, Marshall is able to create well-written works that do not only present his thoughts about his political adherence, but also impose on the realities that are happening which readers could immediately relate to. One of his interesting writes is the article on The Continuing Significance of Race: The Transformation of American Politics. In this article he discusses different issues that relate race with the American politics. Through pointing out some obvious elements of change, Marshal uses different facts observed in the American society along with the kind of reactions other writers have upon the matter.
About the Article
Race is the focal point in the article of Marshall. Discussing how race has shaped the entirety of the American history, Marshall tried to create a definite source of confidence that does not only identify the role of race in building up the society but also the relative reaction it gets from the society. Further pointing out to the black American Race and the other minorities in the country, Marshall tries to uncover the reality behind the assumptions of the some idealists that race has been declining in the country especially in assumptions and issues about political growth. Through this article, Marshall hopes to make an assumptive position in pointing out how race is actually not declining and still have definite control to the operations of politics in the country.
Reflection on Article
At the beginning of the article itself, Marshall already points out how interesting the topic of race and politics is, showing how the two could practically contradict or support each other depending on how the society views it. At some point, the social commentators used to believe that it is with the emergence of the Civil Rights that race-issues would diminish especially in assuming the course of development that the country is taking. According to several academic and scholarly sources [as per researched by Marshall], experts like Julius Wilson point out in his article “The Declining Significance of Race” (1980) that race issues are already declining at the onset of the abolition of slavery. Through the analysis of Marshall on this article, he clears the argument through particular evidences that Wilson himself used in his article. Nonetheless, Marshall did not stop in agreeing upon what Wilson imposed about race and politics. It was his ideal desire to create an argument that would challenge the identification of race as a declining aspect of importance in the American society.
To do this, he placed certain considerations on the actual situations occurring in the world today. Believably, he created a sense of analysis imposing his readers to question themselves. Some of the elemental questions he imposed included an indicative analysis of the country’s political mobilization, the forces of ethnicity and how it affects the public law, issues on race being a good source of personal identity for many, the pride of being “White” as well as the impact of racial diversity in the course of imposing elements of development within the pages of the US history.
Giving a clear description on how race takes its role as part of the country’s factor towards development, Marshall clearly creates a line that connects race and politics which even the regular individual could understand. Explaining theories of social development such as the idealisms of structuralism, Marshall has been able to create a clear outline that would help his readers find a more convincing belief about the real effects of race and the non-declination that it is incurring within the present making of America’s history.
Critique of Writing
Simple yet scholarly; that is how Marshall utilized the words that define his position in describing the actual role of race in the process of development that US incurs. Believably, his research materials and the information he collected for the presentation made this written work a viable source of understanding especially when it comes to examining measures of declination that race has been incurring in the country. Showing how some might place the emergence of non-slavery culture in the US to put cessation on race inclination in the society being a cover-up to the actual occurrence of racial discrimination in the country was indeed clear and dependably reliable. Utilizing facts that could be directly observed by the readers, Marshall created a more visible presentation on how race does create a sense of imbalance in America and how it affects the political standpoint of the nation.
Overall Reaction
Overall, it could be said that Marshall’s article is well referenced thus making it dependable when it comes to presenting the values of race and politics in an unbiased approach. Creating a more visible condition on how racial differences affect the American society today makes it easier for readers from all walks of life to be enlightened about the real effects of social discrimination due to race which could be duly realized through examining the American Political system with a closer look.
