An Intellectual Experience, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 320

Essay

One of my most inspired intellectual experiences occurred when I was introduced to the textbook ” The New Rational Manager, written by Charles H Kepner and Benjamin B Tregoe of Princeton University. The book was first published in 1981 and is based upon the premise of rational management theory.  How you investigate a problem, the analysis to be performed, situational appraisal and making an informed and balanced decision. The book inspired me to adopt a more formalized approach to problem solving and decision making. This influenced the way I approached situational and problem analysis resulting in a more logical appraisal and informed decision making process

Although the method and techniques employ a great deal of intelligence and creative skills it also requires a great deal of “common sense” application.  The automation of a great deal of analysis is performed on software provided by the authors, Professors at Princeton University.  Understanding and using this method is very inspiring in the sense of covering a process that solves a problem and leads you to making an informed decision that is customized to a specific set of circumstances or events.

Although the method is essentially a Management Tool, nevertheless it does have other purposes.  There is a dark side to this in so far as it can be used as an offensive means to make winning decisions that subdue potential adversaries who are either making poor decisions or are unfamiliar of the possibilities of the K-T method.  Used in a political context it can place you in a winning position and enable you to overcome potential rivals.  The advantage of this method is that it helps you to make sound decisions. A valuable toolset assist that makes you approach problem solving and decision making in an evaluative and logical manner.  The alternative is random actions that are not well thought through and lack a consistent thought process based upon logical interpretation of the problem under.
