Anger Management for the Special Education Teacher, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 327

Essay

As a part of the teaching profession, it is almost guaranteed that teachers will encounter angry parents at times. For special education teachers, this is an important concern. Though it is an issue, it is important that teachers maintain professionalism and work with the parents to find a solution to any problem for the good of the child. This is accomplished first by the teacher controlling his or her own feelings and working to harness the energy of the parent to focus on the issue with the child.

The first step when dealing with angry parents is for a teacher to control his or her own feelings. To do so, it may be necessary to break away from the parent, or to take a moment for gathering thoughts. The point is to avoid acting brashly and overreacting with anger. This is one of the most unprofessional courses of action that a teacher can take.  Instead, a teacher must learn to deal with his or her own anger and to avoid reacting when confronted. This can be accomplished by any number of techniques, from counting to ten, to breathing exercises, and forcing a smile.

The next step is to attempt to redirect the anger of the parent in order to work toward a solution that is best for the child. When breaking away, it is best to return with something to offer the parent, like a glass of water. Humility and kind words are an absolute necessity in order to avoid upsetting the parent further. Teachers must always remember that the biggest point is to provide for the wellbeing of the child.

It is important to maintain professionalism when dealing with angry parents. It is not acceptable to return anger or to do anything that may interfere with the ultimate goal of providing for the best interest of the child. Special education teachers must exhibit appropriate professionalism and restraint at all times and remember that the real priority is the child.
