Annie Hall (1977), Movie Analysis Example

Movie Analysis

The story revolves about a man’s journey on determining the cause of the failure of his relationship with his wife Annie Hall. In his journey, he tried to identify several bumps in their relationship especially when it comes to defining his possible shortcomings. Trying to go back to the paths that he has taken during the time he met his wife, to the time when they got together leading up to their marriage. Their connection was rather short lived, one year to be exact. Such a condition of a supposedly good marriage ending up with an immediate failure served as a mystery to him, making it a point of his frustration. The reconciliation between Annie and Alvy was rather subtle but meaningful presented at the last strand of the film when both individuals were shown to have a conversation specifically pointing out the possible beginning of rekindling the relationship and their emotions that they shared in the past.

This movie has been chosen for this analysis because of the fact that it shows a lot of contrast between the condition of a understanding a relationship’s value in consideration with the thinking process of a man and a woman. Notably, the narrator or the one seemingly telling the story is the male main character because of the fact that he is the one undergoing the journey towards realizing matters completely. However, the plot by which he follows the pattern of a journey towards his desired result is much reflective of how a woman might want to know how her relationship ended and actually find a way to bring it back to its better state.

Seemingly, when it comes to relationships, men are more on the connection side of the process. The way they connect with the woman is what makes the relationship worth keeping. When a relationship ends, men, in general, often find it hard to make it their quest to make the matter a source of frustration for them. It usually takes time before they realize such matter. When they do, they do not often ask questions, they try to make the answers as they tread along the process of understanding the whats and the whys of the situation that occurred.

On the other end, women, being on the more sensitive side of the matter, are most often than not more willing to get involved into asking questions to themselves and to other people, trying to learn their mistake through using others as a mirror to their possible shortcomings. In the story, Alvy was presented to be a man that was ideal in the woman’s eyes. Notice the fact that even though he wanted to search for answers, he was careful enough not to touch the sexual side of the situation. Most often than not, if it is the man who was actually telling the story, it would be the sexual relationship that is questioned first hand. Being not interested so much in the sexual connection that the couple shared and more focused on the emotional bonding that they had, the background of the most enjoyable moments they have shared and the quality of time that they had with each other emanates that the process of realization is presented following a woman’s perspective on relationships.

Being sentimental and all is a sign that a woman wants to see in her ideal man. In this movie, Alvy, the ideal man for every woman, was presented to have a specific concern for matters that were important to Annie. Even the ending of the movie suggests a woman’s perspective of reconciliation. Nothing too much dependent on physical connection, instead more focused on rekindling the emotional communication that the couple shared; this is how women want their relationships to be bounded within the rules of emotional and sentimental matter that identify with their being. The movie shows that when a man gives importance to what the woman feels and not just how she wants their sexual intimacies are established, the woman feels more comfortable and engaged in the idea of rekindling the past and possibly giving their relationship another shot to a more successful future.
