Satorra, A., & Bentler, P. M. (2010). “Ensuring positiveness of the scaled difference chi-square test statistic.” Psychometrika, 75(2), 243-243-248. doi:10.1007/s11336-009-9135-y

Summary:

After going into both a brief history and the relevant uses of a Chi Squared test, the authors go on to explicate a correction to the original model that makes hand calculations, not only a little more efficient, but also more accurate. Since a common problem with the named statistics is that they sometime operate outside of their SEM programming, these new scaling measures will virtually solve such a problem by simplifying the calculations needed to arrive at the answer. The issues prior to the fix included issues with asymptotic equalities and their convergence with true values under the null hypothesis. These new proposed model variations will ultimately solve the inherent problems with an ‘uninterpretable’ negative ?2 solving a problem that has bugged researchers and statisticians for a long time. So, while not necessarily revolutionary, these new model adjustments will further the path to knowledge by providing more accurate results. The possibilities are limitless.

Yes, the article indicates that the current problem with the statistical ?2 is that negative values do not really further the analysis. This study solves those problems making everything of use.

No, not really. The article is merely an explanation on a new model adjustment for a well known, and commonly used, statistical analysis. That is to say that the articles serves as information and details, but not research itself.

There were not really variables but rather equations that were established for new data collection. The data was collected for the new equations via trial and error to develop ways to solve the problem. Everything in the article adequately fits and the data type is informative because it is an explanation of a new system but not a study to show how it was established; rather it demonstrates that it does in fact solve problems.

The data analysis was simply application of the new model adjustments and illustrating why they worked; why these changes were an advancement in the field. The methods are appropriate for the study as it served mainly to inform and not really prove a new theory.

While there is not really a research problem being solved, the new data results in new calculations to gain more accurate data from the ?2 analysis. Still, all of the questions presented within the study are answered.

Overall, the article was just for an assignment and while it may affect my calculations in the future, at the moment I do not see it. Still, the research presented definitely contributes to knowledge overall and the adjustments to such common calculations could mean a lot for future experiments.
