Specific Purpose: To address various problems caused by the lack of maintenance of Kean University’s Union campus due to issue of policies and procedures.
Thesis Statement: Kean University students face the risk of injury, damages to vehicles, and the compromise of student’s positive attitudes as a result of the physical appearance on campus ground.
Introduction
- Attention-Getting Opener: How many of you commute to Kean University?
- Tie to the Audience: Isn’t it fun trying to find a parking spot within walking distance no matter how early you come to campus? Well, we the Purple Team, all have to commute and agree that once we get to Kean University, finding a parking spot is not easy.
- Credibility Builder: Our team is formed of juniors and seniors with different class schedules at Kean. We all shared our experiences with finding a parking spot and agreed that on average, it takes about 30 minutes to find a parking spot. We also agreed on the large amount of pot holes and faded parking lines that the Kean lot has.
- Thesis and Preview: Kean University has maintenance issues inside and outside of campus which does not allow students to be motivated, organized, and punctual in order to succeed. Today we will outline the biggest problems students face at Kean University, overview three possible solutions for these problems, and explain how to implement it.
[Transition statement into body of presentation] Now Josette will get us started by identifying the main problems.
Body
- Main Point 1: Identify the Problem
- Students’ positive attitudes as a result of the physical appearance on campus ground.
- Describe the Problem
As previously stated the problem which we are currently facing is the lack of maintenance on the Union campus of Kean University due to the policies and procedures of Kean. Before we continue I would like to introduce the policies and procedures that are implemented at Kean. (I have to find this information) So as you can see because of these policies the latter occurs.

- Facts of Health Risk:
In respect to mold, some are sensitive to it causing them nasal stuffiness, coughing, and wheezing. For those who have severe reactions to mold they can go anywhere from bad skin irritations to being hospitalized due to chronic lung diseases they may have. In such a case, that is a sensitive topic and should be private to that student and the schools medical services department alone. *****(insert info frmwrk cited page) According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2004 studies found, “ there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. The IOM also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children.”
- Comparison of Buildings (Ben Stem Experience)
- Importance of the Problem
- Describe extent of problem
- Extra Money being used
- Parking Tickets
- Physical Damages leading to payments in repairs
- Expensive Doctor visits & Medications:
Doctor visits & Medications
As we all know during these tough economic times visits to the Doctor’s office can be very expensive with insurance so you can just imagine those who don’t have insurance yet alone the medications to treat these illnesses. I was injured at my job and although it was a foot injury the price of the ambulance ride (literally 10 minutes) was $1919.00 just to show you how expensive medical treatment is without Insurance but luckily because it was a job related injury I didn’t have to pay anything. I do not want you to get the idea that I am saying because Kean’s union campus isn’t maintained to the greatest level that it is causing health issues alone but enough exposure along with already existing issues indeed can cause more severities.

- Prospective Students
- Prospective students who may have a history of medical complications
- Parents/Guardians Judgment (Decision making)
- Colleges Reputation
- Examples or a story
If a student has a family history of breathing problems attending a University that can possibly alter their condition will definitely cause him/her to choose another school despite their wanting to attending Kean. *****(insert info frmwrk cited page) According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “more than half of asthmatics have respiratory allergies, often to mold. Molds can trigger asthma episodes in sensitive asthmatics. Furthermore, some mold species can cause respiratory infection when the live mold invades the tissues of the lungs or respiratory tract. This is not a significant risk for healthy people, but can be dangerous for individuals with severely weakened immune systems.”
Many times you have families come together to visit the school say during an orientation and amongst these families are toddlers, younger siblings, and or even the student’s child themselves. What are the chances that someone’s two year old is picking at chip paint while the parent, guardian, and or family members are attentively attending the orientation. Next thing you know the child is now inserting the chips of paint in their mouths. Then what? How would Kean react? More importantly how would that child’s family react?
Consequences of problem
- Facts or statistics:
- Decrease in Admin: Transfers
- Grades Drop: Attendance: Lack of Parking
- Bad word of mouth: Feedback: Alumni
- Accreditation of college drops
- Prospect students may choose another college
- Facts or statistics
- Examples or a story
Decrease in Admin: Transfers & Accreditation of college drops:
- According to the Fasfa website through College Navigator:
- School Name Kean University
- Graduation Rate 50%
- Retention Rate 72%
- Transfer Rate 29%
Grades Drop: Attendance: Lack of Parking:
“Ms. Binns stated herself that she missed a class one week due to the lack of parking after searching for 30 minutes along with inclement weather conditions which although one absence will not affect her grades the situation all together discouraged her from attending class”
Now we will hear from Josette who will describe the Criteria which is needed to find possible solutions to this problem.
Step 1 of Plan:
Refurbishing the parking lot is a priority, but it will be expensive to do on a comprehensive basis. It is recommended that we approached this on an incremental basis. First, to develop a comprehensive list of parking repairs and enhancements. To modify parking lines, filling in pot holes, pave sidewalks, and create additional parking capacity for Kean students and faculty.
Step 2 of Plan:
Having and showing signs of positive progress, on the parking lot entrance and exit portals would be a “low cost – high impact” action item that should be considered immediately. Kean students and faculty will feel motivated and involved because the signs will prove to them that work is being done about the situation.
Step 3 of Plan:
Obtain certain measures of the effectiveness of the respective actions that will be taken to implement the parking plan need to be established in order to determine whether the proposed parking strategies and management actions are having their desired impact. These measures of effectiveness will be measured by student surveys, positive/negative word of mouth, and safety procedures.
Conclusion
In relation to the project being proposed, it is obvious how issues of parking could actually result to weak satisfaction on the part of the students [who are the main clients of universities]. In relation to this, other problems occur at the same time, including health issues and studying concentration problems on the part of the students who experience anxieties because of the emergence of parking problems.
Summary
The need to resolve issues of parking in institutions such as universities could improve the overall environment that the students and the teachers need to work with. The lesser time spend in looking for parking spaces specifically make it possible for both teachers and students to focus on more important matters such as the education; the reason why they attend the universities in the first place. What makes this project specifically purposeful is the fact that it could improve the overall environment of the university both for its students and for its teachers.
