Research Paper

Having review relevant information, I am prepared to answer the following question. How is form different from subject matter and content? Subject matter is what the piece is about. Content is refers to the meaning of the art. Form is more about the methods used to create the piece.

“Olympia”

1863

Manet

After viewing Edouard Manet’s “Olympia,” 1863, I am prepared to discuss form, subject matter, and content. Which elements of art does Manet focus on? Manet focuses on line, color, shape, and space. Who is the subject of the painting and what is the meaning of the work? There are two subjects: a white woman and a Black woman. The meaning of the work is that the licentious nature of whites has historical meant servitude for Blacks. The Black woman is handing the oblivious white woman a bouquet. It is as if to say that the beauty of life for Black people is somehow forfeited to the material desires of whites.

Here I compare and contrast the work of Gronik and Holmkvist in terms of form (including materials), subject, content, and use of the elements of art. Gronik works mainly with ink and paint. Her subjects are usually natural or inanimate scenes. The contents of her work focus on questions of mood, and she implements line, color and value to express it. Holmkvist focuses on photo art. But her subjects are often people. The contents of her work underscore the social stressors experienced by people everyday. She emphasizes perspective, line, and color to express this.

Here I compare and contrast the work of Manet and Monet in terms of form (including materials), subject, content, and use of the elements of art.

Manet focuses on social commentary is his contents as a method of covert protest. Monet focuses on society also but forms a standpoint of exclusion. Both are mainly painters, but where Manet emphasizes line, value, and shape, Monet emphasis color, space and texture. Subjects of both artists are often people and/or nature.
