There are various themes, styles as well as characters that are depicted by Kate Chopin in his story entitled, “At Fault”. In the story, Kate Chopin uses various literary skills and experiences in order to present different character backgrounds of her main characters in the book including their social and economic positions in the society. The story is also historically set in the United States of America especially during early 1980s.Furthermore; the story depicts a number of romantic and love experiences that individuals experience in the society. The story was written after the reconstruction period and depicts a strong love between a North American man and South American woman. In addition, the story also depicts a strong relationship between a Caucasian and African American characters. In that sense, this paper will specifically focus on the unique characters and behaviors of Therese Lafirme. The paper will also analyze the social and economic backgrounds of Therese Lafirme and various factors that depict her as a strong and successful woman in the American society.
Analysis of Therese Lafirme Unique Characters in the Story, “At Fault”, by Kate Chopin
In the story, “At Fault”, by Kate Chopin, Therese Lafirme is one of the main characters and is depicted a strong and successful woman that achieves his goals and objectives despite many social problems she faces in the society. At the age of thirty-two years, she lost her husband through death and had to struggle alone by managing the family plantation firm at Louisiana. She met a man with good moral behaviors and religious backgrounds, but she refuses her marriage proposal. The character Therese Lafirme s also used by the author in order to depict the theme of love and personal achievements that individuals can gain in the society if they work hard. Despite being a widow, Therese Lafirme successful run a plantation firm at Louisiana and her husband business operations. She is faced with a tough decision between love and choosing of traditional ethics and values when she is approached by David Hosmer for love relationship. This illustrates the fault that Therese Lafirme is facing in the story. In that sense, the story illustrates unique American behaviors including struggling to be successful in the society despite social challenges as witnessed in Therese Lafirme personality and behaviors.
The story also clearly depicts the strong writing skills and hardworking qualities of Kate Chopin as illustrated in behaviors and social activities of Therese Lafirme. The characters also depict some of the unique stereotypes and ethnic problems that are common in the American society. For example, the relationship between African American called David Hosmer and Creole woman known as Therese Lafirme clearly indicates that Americans beliefs in intermarriages between different races. Furthermore, the character is also used in the story to depict some of the flaws that are evident in the southern pastoral traditions and conventions in the American society.
It also clear from the behaviors and characteristics of Therese Lafirme that she has strong and stable American spirits of hard work and other capitalist ideals and values. Therese Lafirme is also represented the strong voices of women in the early American society that has transformed the country towards the achievement of stable modern economic development in terms of educations and other technological based operations. Therese Lafirme also assumes the traditional male pastoral role by actively involving in the management of their plantation firm at her husband’s death. This indicates her strong American spirits of providing equal roles and opportunities to both men and women in the society.
Furthermore, it is also clear that Therese Lafirme depicts positive attitude towards various races in the society as witnessed by various individuals in the current American society. In that sense, Therese Lafirme mostly depicts and represents Kate Chopin life and social activities in the society including the social problems that Kate Chopin experience in her life in the American society. Despite all these problems, she managed to be one of the literacy movement advocates in the society by encouraging the individual to read, study and by writing various literary works.
