This is the cost of uncertainty in achieving the aviation industry’s objective of total safety to all publics.

Proactive safety management programs

Some of the safety management programs include the Safety Management System (SMS) which has been reported by “” (Fant, 2010, p. 6) as the next regulation in the aviation industry globally, the SMS is a top down risk management approach concerned with safety decision making within an organization. It is a requirement that the safety management program should not be separated from the organizations’ business decision making and operational decision making, but as an integral part of any operators overall organizational fundamentals

Components of an SMS

Safety policy:

The safety policy is geared at establishing the managements commitment towards improving safety within the organizations by defining the methods of needed to meet the organization’s safety goals as well as the processes and the organizational structure “” (WFC, 2010, p. 4)

Safety risk management

The aviation safety risk management is a proactive organization safety management program geared at reducing the aviation risks by determining and developing risk control measures and revising the risks controls while contemplating the degree of acceptable risks within the aviation industry“” (Wells Fargo & Company [WFC], 2010, p. 6)

Safety assurance

Another proactive measure for reducing the aviation safety cost of risks is the Safety assurance component of the SMS. The SMS can easily be in identifying new risks and evaluating the effectiveness of the of the existing risk control strategies “” (Fant, 2010, p. 2)

Safety promotion

Training and communication must be designed to develop a positive culture of safety in entire levels of the organization. Some of the costs associated with the aviation safety cost of risks include the e-learning programs, software sand seminars in addition to the capital investment of procuring the SMS, it is however, imperative to note that though the cost of procuring and implementing the SMS is high, it is worth the effort because it is not easy to contemplate losses and quantify before risks occur (WFC, 2010, p. 5).
