Barton Clara, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 333

Essay

Clarissa Harlowe “Clara” Barton was born on December 25, 1821. Viewed as the ultimate Christmas present to her parents, Clara brought much joy to family and close friends. Barton also made a significant impact in the field of nursing that will never fade away.

The American Red Cross

Although she made many contributions as an educator and humanitarian, Barton is best known for founding the American Red Cross. Primarily viewed as a disaster relief program, the American Red Cross has assisted thousands of individuals needing shelter, education, and blood transfusions during a disaster. Having the central goal of preventing and relieving suffering, the Red Cross has served as a lifeline to many communities during crises.

The Civil War

Clara Barton served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) until she was eighty years old. Prior to serving as CEO, Barton was a nurse on the frontlines during the civil war. Having a desire to help soldiers injured in battle, Clara petitioned the United States Army to bring her own medical supplies to the frontline for treatment. Although initially rejected by the bureaucracy, Barton was eventually granted permission to serve as a frontline nurse on August 3, 1862.

Conclusion

While she was not primarily recognized as a nurse, Clara Barton became one of the greatest medical professionals of her time. Her efforts during the civil war paved the way for military personnel working in the medical field. Nurses serving in the army have the necessary tools to treat wounded soldiers because of Clara’s efforts. Soldiers have also benefited from Barton’s service as better treatment on the frontline leads to fewer amputations and other health complications in the future. In addition to changing the scope of nursing in the military, Barton established a disaster relief program that has effectively rebuilt and distributed aid to millions of families in need. Although not always recognized for her efforts, Clarissa Harlowe “Clara” Barton is a forerunner in the nursing field. Many policies and procedures in nursing would be foreign today if not for Barton’s efforts.
