Biracial Perspectives, Essay Example

Theory

According to Wright, it is theorized that mixed-race partnering and multiracialism is related to the conceptualization of newness and space and the distinction of where that line begins. He states that previous testing focuses on residential and workplace organization rather than what specifically occurs once a multiracial household is created. This concept seeks to uncover where they live, how they make their decisions, how their children and households are affected. It should be emphasized that households and bodies are plural and are not monoracialized.

White Supremacy

Whites have maintained their supremacy of the races by reinforcing systems of patriarchy, race and class defining their social, political and economic advantage through vilifying any person who crossed the line. [1](Moran 2001). [2]Loving v Virgina ended the racial discrimination on biracial marriages.  This was a landmark case for the rights of biracial peoples in 1967.  In late 1863 a pamphlet, entitled Miscegenation: the theory of the blending of the races, applied to the American white man and Negro, appeared on newsstands. Mixed-race partnerships confound conceptions of social (in) equality between groups through reconfigurations of status and privilege. Mixed-race household residential location in neighbourhoods reflects a combination of choices and constraints. “Constraints include financing, the activity of real estate agents and neighbourhood milieu. On the choice side, mixed-race households much like everybody else, view neighbourhoods as sites for creating and enacting their identities. Language is implicated in this process; we should develop fresh language to identify racial newness when and where it enters the world. New language stands up to the taken-for-granted social and spatial aspects of everyday life.” [3](Wright, R., 2003).

Questions:

  1. In what regions do mixed households survive and flourish?
  2. What factors are considered with respect to a mixed household’s progress?
  3. Does ‘white guilt’ influence the progress of mixed households and to what extent?
  4. In what ways does present human rights legislation allow biracial’s rights to ‘slip through’ the cracks and give examples of HR infringements?
