Essay

Thanks to science, individuals today are able to express themselves in the best way that they want to. For a long time, women have been increasingly preoccupied with improving their body appearance to enhance their beauty. In most cases, these efforts are centered at improving the femininity of a woman through improving the anatomic features of the body to look more of stereotyped beautiful woman. The breast therefore has been the major area of focus when improving the beauty of a woman. This has been especially so for those women who feel that they have been less endowed with breasts. Medical surgery procedures promises to offer help to women grow their desired breasts.

There are different types of breast augmentation (breast enlargement) methods available today. They are aimed at improving the size of the breast and improving the physical appearance of a woman. The most common breast enlargement methods (implants) are the Saline and silicone implants.

In the saline implants, silicone elastomer is filled with sterile salt water to affect the feel, size, shape and firmness of the breast. In this type of implants, should the silicone elastomer leak, the saline water is absorbed by the body. In the silicone implants, the implants are filled with elastic gel that makes the breast look, feel and move like natural breasts. Should these type of implants leak, the gel may leak into the implant pocket or it just remains in the implant.

Depending on which type of implant chosen, there are associated effects of having breast implants. The silicone implants have been associated connective tissue diseases or cancer. Developments in this field however suggest that the silicone implants are safe and there has been no evidence of connection between the silicone implants and any of the diseases. However this type of breast augmentation is recommended for individuals over the age of 22 years.
