Breast Pumps and Equipment Affordability
Objectives: By the end of the session, the student will be able to: 1) list at least two types of breast pumps that are available at an affordable cost; 2) list at least two benefits of insurance coverage in the provision of breast pumps for patients; and 3) list two benefits and disadvantages of the Affordable Care Act in relation to breast pumps.
Rationale: When a client understands and recognizes the benefits of using breast pumps as a secondary alternative for feedings when actual breastfeeding time is not available, this will provide benefits to the client and to the newborn child. However, the cost of breast pumps is also a concern; therefore, insurance coverage when available is recognized as a feasible alternative for clients to receive access to breast pumps for their use.
Learning Strategies/Teacher/Learner Activities: For this lesson plan, the instructor will engage clients in a discussion regarding the benefits of using breast pumps as part of the breastfeeding process. These benefits will be emphasized in order to demonstrate the value of this piece of equipment as part of a client’s breastfeeding regimen. The group will be divided into smaller groups of two to three persons to discuss this practice. In addition, the instructor will ask each student to address the benefits and disadvantages of insurance coverage in relation to breast pumps and how this impacts a client’s decision to purchase a pump for personal use. The entire group will then reconvene and address their findings with the instructor in order to determine the effectiveness of this option and whether or not it is affordable for client use.
Materials Needed: For this lesson plan, pens and paper will be used by students to write down their ideas. In addition, a white board and a dry erase marker will be used by the instructor to discuss these ideas. In addition, illustrations of different types of breast pumps will be used and a sample breast pump will be provided in class.
Medications/Birth Control/Smoking/Marijuana/Alcohol
Objectives: By the end of the session, the student will be able to 1) state two advantages of taking medications during breastfeeding; 2) state one advantage and two disadvantages of using marijuana during breastfeeding; 3) state two disadvantages of using alcohol during breastfeeding; and 4) state two disadvantages of smoking during breastfeeding.
Rationale: When a client understands the risks associated with medications, marijuana, smoking, and alcohol use during breastfeeding, the tendency to use these substances is likely to be minimized in order to reduce any possible risks to both mother and child. However, recognizing that clients might not be able to give up these substances easily must also be considered (Fisher, 2014). As a result, clients will recognize that a gradual decline in the use of these substances may be necessary until they are no longer used at all or in heavy moderation (Fisher, 2014). In either case, clients may recognize that substance use during breastfeeding is not a cut and dry issue and that some substances are likely to be more harmful than others for clients and for their children (Fisher, 2014).
Learning Strategies/Teacher/Learner Activities: For this lesson plan, the instructor will engage clients in groups to discuss this lesson. In addition, the instructor will ask each group to write down several advantages and disadvantages of these substances during breastfeeding. Once this information is discussed among the smaller groups, the larger group will reconvene in order to address these risks and any possible advantages to their use. This discussion will support opinions from all sides of the argument in order to determine the best possible strategy to support clients during the breastfeeding process.
Materials Needed: For this lesson plan, pens, paper, a white board, dry erase marker, and colorful posters will be used to address the different types of drugs/substances that may be used during breastfeeding and how to manage and/or minimize their use effectively.
Breastfeeding at Work and School
Objectives: By the end of the session, the student will be able to 1) state two benefits breastfeeding at work and/or at school; 2) state two disadvantages of breastfeeding at work and/or at school; and 3) state two alternatives to prevent the need for breastfeeding at work and/or at school.
Rationale: When a client understands the impact of breastfeeding at work or at school in a public environment, the potential disadvantages of this practice will also be identified, along with options for children during the work and school hours. The permissibility of this practice must be considered because it is expected that some cultures will be resistant to this practice and will require other alternatives to traditional methods (Utah Department of Health, 2015).
Learning Strategies/Teacher/Learner Activities: For this lesson plan, the instructor will engage clients in smaller groups to discuss whether or not it is appropriate to breastfeed a child at work or at school and how to avoid complications in this process. The discussions will also require students to recognize the potential cultural or social barriers associated with this practice. The group will reconvene and the instructor will address these findings in a larger discussion format and discuss feasible alternatives.
Materials Needed: For this lesson plan, pens, paper, a white board, and a dry erase marker will be used to discuss findings. In addition, the instructor will provide a colorful poster regarding breastfeeding in a public location and how this might be perceived in a variety of different social situations.
