Brownfield V. Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital, Case Study Example

Pages: 1

Words: 353

Case Study

Rape does not in any way respond to the desire of women to give birth. Relatively, the desire to whether or not push through with a ‘possible’ pregnancy is supposed to be based upon the mother’s [victim’s] decision. In the case presented, it is essential to note that it is the hospital’s responsibility to provide rape victims with the information they need especially when it comes to accessing a morning-after pill. The case is that technically, there is no life-formed yet. It is the mere assumption of the patient of the possibility of pregnancy because of the occurrence of incident [rape] that she went to the hospital and asked for help and possibly, a treatment to help her ease out from an unwanted pregnancy. This is in a way not a form of abortion, but merely the prevention of it.

It is important that hospitals [whether religious or not] be able to understand that there are some decisions they are not supposed to meddle with. Once they have done their job, provided the role that they were supposed to take in relation to treating the needs of their patients, then the decision of whether or not to continue with a treatment already lies upon the patient’s decision. The hospitals are sworn to an oath to make sure that every patient is notably provided with the right information about their case, their situation and the possible treatments they could take, may it be dangerous or not. Same thing is true when it comes to deciding whether or not to take a morning-after pill especially among rape victims.

The judge’s decision was relatively balanced. Seeing the ethical matter that binds the connection between the patient and her healthcare attendants regarding the need to provide her with the treatment she needs since it does not involve anything illegal, the court’s ruling could be considered agreeable. It was vital that the hospital provided such request from the patient especially that she is a rape victim and bearing a child which could have been prevented [not terminated] could change her life and that of the child’s in a huge manner.
