Abstract

This capstone project describes the assessment, implementation and intended outcome of an improvement intervention to be conducted at the Driscoll Children’s Hospital located in South Texas, United States of America.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital

Introduction

Driscoll Children’s Hospital has developed from a 25-bed facility into one that has a medical staff comprising of pediatric specialists in more than 32 medical and 13 surgical disciplines. The magnitude of this advancement has made restructuring of many units have become inevitable. As such, while designing an extensive project to restructure the entire hospital is impossible as a single undertaking, this capstone project will focus on the medical surgical intensive care pediatric units. The goal is to improve nursing outcomes among pediatric patients admitted in this clinical setting.

Body

Two theoretical models will be applied in the restructuring process. They are the P’s Model (Strategic Management Model) and Expectancy Theory of Motivation for adequately evaluating the outcome of this intervention. Plan, Ploy, Pattern, Position and Perspective are the five positive essential strategic features necessary for making this process a success. Expectancy Theory of Motivation is expected to help management understand reasons why nurses, doctors and persons working the in medical surgical pediatric intensive care unit behave in a particular way. There are three main components of this theory; namely effort, performance and valence (Schunk & Meece, 2012).

Conclusion

A summary of the project along with the outcomes will be offered in this section. Recommendations will be suggested as well as continuous evaluation of the successes achieved will be documented.
