Essay

Carbon emissions reduction through online shopping and other services

Reduction of carbon emissions means cutting down the levels of carbon dioxide together with carbon monoxide which is released to the atmosphere as a result of industrial processes and moving vehicles. This paper posits to highlight an innovative idea on carbon emissions reduction. The use of technology and greener alternatives is one important and dynamic innovative way of achieving this goal.

Online shopping, banking and service delivery are good examples of innovative ideas that contribute significantly towards reduction of carbon emissions (Harmon & Auseklis, 2009).  The use of online banking and payment of bills drastically cuts down unnecessary energy consumption otherwise used in the production of papers, disposal of wastes, travelling by vehicles and printing. Online transactions reduce the trips to get products and services leading to the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases that are associated with transportation. Reading newspapers and other news articles through the internet also offers an added eco-friendly alternative as opposed to the use of print media to access the news. The internet is gaining popularity and it has some advantages over traditional methods as well as being cost effective. These activities are done by the use of computers which also requires proper use and reduction of power demand along with emissions. The computer together with its screen should be turned of or switched to sleep mode if it is not in use (Harmon & Auseklis, 2009). It is important to appreciate the fact that human activities are responsible for release of carbon emissions to the atmosphere, with transportation and fossil fuels burning being the most notable. The gases emitted consequently results to climate change leading to escalating global temperatures.
