Creative Essay

What skills and traits do you think are essential in becoming an effective Ophthalmologists?

An ophthalmologist needs to have unique skills to diagnose and treat any eye disease, conduct eye surgery, fit eyeglasses and contact lenses, and prescribe medicine. In some cases, one may become involved research about vision disorders and eye diseases. As a result, a must-have trait is the ability to communicate empathetically and effectively with patients since an eye issue may cause anxiety. Another needed trait is good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and good vision. A qualified ophthalmologist will need to have a working knowledge of the eye’s function, anatomy, and diseases. Similar to other professionals in the medical field, it is also essential to have excellent time management and organizational skills. Other skills include the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, good decision-making and problem-solving skills.

How do you see yourself contributing to the educational community and diversity as a student?

As a student, I aim to contribute to the educational community by actively engaging in learning. It is my goal to attend and participate in all my classes. I will also participate in extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports, and art to develop my social skills and grow as a team player. This will help me realize some of the skills needed to work in the medical field, such as excellent communication skills.

One way that I will support diversity in the institution is by addressing inequality. My life experiences permit me to be in the leading line to supporting diversity and stopping inequality. It is crucial to have an environment where tutors and students are treated fairly despite their race, gender, socioeconomic background, and ethnicity. I hope that my participation in various learning activities will provide me with a platform to begin a conversion about diversity and inspire others to do the same.

Is there any aspect of medicine you think you do not like? If so, what, and why not?

Yes, I am not fond of the insurance aspect of medicine as I believe that it creates inequality in treatment. For instance, people with an existing condition must undergo a waiting period, typically four years, before the illness is covered. Similarly, people without insurance are likely to forgo medical checks, which puts them at risk of chronic diseases such as cancer. Also, policies such as prior authorization may keep the physician from offering timely services. This forces some patients to make cash transactions and later make a claim. I believe that reducing industrial regulatory burdens such as prior authorization can help solve this issue. Currently, this process is inefficient, time-consuming, and lacks transparency. There is also a need to develop new payment models and policies that lower the cost of healthcare services. Some countries have universal health services that create a payment model that ensures everyone can access basic services and checkups at no charge.

Describe a personal experience that has demonstrated your resilience?

One of the most challenging experiences was as a team leader for a group assignment in my previous school. The teacher had high expectations for us. However, once we submitted our initial draft, the teacher gave us a failing grade, and we had to start over with the task. There was no way to submit a draft first this time. This made everyone uncomfortable, and as the group leader, I was to blame for the first draft’s failure. The experience put me under a lot of stress, to the point that I wanted to resign as team leader. Nonetheless, instead of quitting, I chose to talk to each of the team members and calm them down. This gave me a chance to work with them again.

How will becoming a Ophthalmologists/physician allow you to achieve your long term goals?

As an ophthalmologist, I aspire to work in a group practice alongside other specialists. I want to work with a team of compassionate and knowledgeable individuals who are dedicated to providing excellent care. This will provide me with an opportunity to be mentored and get the necessary experience to work effectively. I also intend to travel as much as possible throughout the country to provide visual health care to people who may not otherwise have it. This will enable me to make a positive impact on the world. I will eventually settle down and open a private practice. This will enable me to become a more active member of my community, where I will be able to serve others by providing eye care.

Major life achievements or explanations of academic or non-academic discrepancies on your application. You may also include interests or work experiences.

I have had a progressive academic journey such that I scored a strong GPA and graduated with honors. This saw me being nominated for the Honors Society. I have also been active during this time of crisis. I worked in healthcare, where I assisted in responding to the problem. This gave me a chance to exercise leadership, authority, and influence since I was in charge of a team that dealt with the patient as they recovered. This experience also allowed me to handle various challenges and complexities in care delivery. For instance, we had to work overtime, which was accompanied by a lot of stress and burnout. I believe that overcoming burnout enhances my resilience.

Some of the discrepancies I experience include dealing with the families of patients who passed away. This affected my ability to perform to my highest level both at home and school. The experience taught me that a bad experience does not cause the world to stop. For instance, I was expected to perform well in school despite this experience. Currently, I have grown more resilient and would not allow a challenge to leave me down. I have learned not to face all issues on my own and that talking to people can help me get through them with ease.
