The bout of unusually cold weather in December destroyed much of Florida’s food crops, including that of green beans, corn, cucumbers etc. Some 9,000 acres of crops were impacted by these freezing conditions. Such conditions are unusual for Florida in December and December is recorded as one of the coldest periods on record. There is nothing you can do about this but the farmers are not prepared for four strong frosts like this in December.

This impacts community health as it provides a shortage of much needed fruit and vegetables during this time of the year. This drives the costs up and may involve importing quotas from outside of the State. The poorer people in the community may not be in a position to afford expensive fruit and vegetables and as such may go without; thus depriving themselves of important nutrients and vitamins during the winter months.

Massive flooding that occurred from the swelling of the Guadalupe River in Texas resulted in the death of three swimmers. At the time of reporting only one body has been recovered. The rainfall exceeded in excess of 15 inches in places. The Governor Rick Perry declared a state of disaster for 40 counties and the storms had created damage that left many places without fresh drinking water.

This represents a health hazard from water born disease contamination and the need to ship in bottled water. People are also at risk of drowning from swells and flooded areas. People also lost houses putting them at risk of exposure in temporary housing conditions.
