Castle the TV Series, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 648

Essay

TV shows are now greatly influenced by what everybody is trying to fight for. By asserting this, I mean gender role, environmental preservation, political aspect and even ethical beliefs (). Despite all this there is one thing that is greatly influenced in the TV series Castle. For starters, this is a detective series where the main character is a lady by the name Kate Bekett. Gender role plays a more important role where as other things like ethics comes in in some of the episodes.

Perhaps one may say that   Richard Castle the character in whom the story is centered but after watching two to three episode of its first season one notices that Bekett is in the middle of every operations as mysteries of her mother’s death are uncovered. Despite the fact that the thinking part is done by both Bekett and Castle to be precise, the former is left to do the hard job. Other than this being her job, it is obvious that feminism is playing a big part in this series. Looking back to such series as Veronica mars, we find that Veronica despite of projecting herself a detective her character is made weak. She cannot handle herself in physical danger (Medic, 2005). In most of the cases she sits down helpless waiting to be rescued.

Detective Bekett on the other hand is the one that comes to the rescue most of the time. As much as we would like to point out the fact that the whole story is based on a mystery writer solving crime which is basically the main plot of the story, Bekett is made to lose her mother in a mysterious way. In addition to that, until Castle decides to help her with the case, she finds herself being the only one trying enough to avenge her mother’s death. Setting the story in a fiction police department and making the story evolve around the daughter (Bekett) whose mother was also a police detective in the same police department is what creates the message in the series (Fisher, 2011).

In season 2 episode 21, Bakett finds herself in a very difficult situation where she has to stay with Castle. This emphasizes more on the feminism aspect of the series since she is seen as a threat to the whole operation. Discovering her mother’s killers will not just bring down the killer but it will bring forth more than that.  Concentrating to season 3 episode 24, the whole story breaks loose (Fisher, 2011). Bekett again finds herself in a very tight situation. Despite the fact that this story revolves around her, ethical values are now brought into the story.

What is morally right is now seen in play as Captain Montgomery being part of Bekett’s mother killing dilemma brings himself out allowing himself to die instead of Bekett. In addition to that, while this may seem to be the end of the story, other characters, Esposito and his friend are astonished as they find that, their captain is in the middle of the whole story (Fisher, 2011). They find it hard to actually believe that the person they have been calling their boss is actually the one who has been all along the mystery that everyone is trying to uncover (Pfaff, 1988).

While season three ends with Montgomery’s death and Bekett taking a bullet, it shows that this story is big. Despite of being centered on police fighting crime and a novelist trying to uncover mystery murders this is also a political corruption story (Greenway, 2005). The person being hunted should be bigger than how they were expecting.
