Essay

In today’s world where English is becoming used internationally, it is arguable that there is no need to learn another language such as French.  The thinking is valid, but only when practicality is the concern.  Learning French brings advantages beyond the ability to communicate, and they very much promote why French should be studied.

To begin with, learning any new language engages the mind and brings development in a general sense.  In focusing on all the components of French, the person’s ability to take in information and make connections is enhanced.  It is then a study helpful to the evolution of any individual’s mental processes.

Studying French also opens up worlds of culture and history to the student.  Any language is a reflection of the life of the people behind it, and French culture is very much expressed in the elements of the language. The study then likely creates a greater awareness of French history and society, today and in the past.

Lastly, to be able to communicate in French goes to a show of respect for the culture.  It “translates” to the understanding that, if English dominates in the world, there is still great value in other languages and cultures.

Consequently, while it may be held that there is no real reason to learn French, language study goes beyond practical need.  English may serve an individual’s communication needs.  Nonetheless, learning French helps to develop the mind, bring awareness of the culture, and demonstrate the appropriate respect for that culture.
