Chapman University, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 394

Essay

I am certainly encouraged by the fact that Chapman University’s (Chapman) academic programs have been recognized for their quality by reputed publications such as The Princeton Review and Bloomberg but this is not the only reason I have chosen Chapman. What appeals to me about Chapman even more is the university’s commitment to positive social change in the society. The university doesn’t just prepare students for their professional careers but also places huge emphasis on character development so that its graduates help make the world a better place for everyone. As someone who hopes to promote positive social change through his films, an education at Chapman will provide me with a strong foundation for my filmmaking career.

I treasure out-of-class experiences as much as in-class experiences when it comes to personal development. Chapman University’s size is just right which helps create a sense of small community and promotes greater levels of interaction among its students. I hope to learn as much from fellow students as I hope to learn from my instructors. College education is a huge investment in one’s future and I am confident I have made the right choice in selecting Chapman to further polish my filmmaking skills.

I became interested in filmmaking because I found it to be one of the most powerful communication channels. A filmmaker has tremendous potential to emotionally connect with the audience which significantly increases the effectiveness of the message. Even as a high school student, I made a film for ABS student lobby as well as undertook several freelance projects. At Chapman, I plan to actively engage with members of different generations including my own, baby boomers, and Generation X. I want to better understand what are the issues they care about and why? I hope to translate some of those issues into documentary films so that I can encourage more and more people to get involved.

Similarly, I also have social issues I really care about and I hope I will find huge support from members of Chapman community. This is also why I am particularly attracted to Chapman because the university provides an ideal environment to students to engage in social activism. I hope I will develop better understanding of issues that affect current and future generations and will also find many friends with whom my working relationship will continue to exist even after I have graduated.
