College Educated or Street Smart, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 647

Essay

Although college education has been given a lot of concentration in the world, there have been debates over its value in society in return. The escalating cost to have college education has caused many to wonder if at long run is worth the investments. The major risk is the issue of low income after trying to make ends meet of having burden of college tuition and fees. Few who opted for being street smart, after high school education suffered in field of humiliation and being undermined that they did not meet standards of modern life but so far their knowledge of life is worth the rates of investments to both individual and the society.

There has been a tendency of many organizations giving college educated “Book smart” more advantage to “Street smart” in the field of entrepreneurship. However it has been revealed that the street smart entrepreneurs had a net worth three times, better than the book smart group and it is not mandatory to have a college degree to be a good entrepreneur, which can turn to be an immaterial, hindering progress. Most of the book smart groups are trained to work by a rule that is, you become conformist. This usually does not work well with entrepreneurs who need to face and find alternative ways to overcome obstacles and not insisting on conventionalism. This is not to mean that college graduates are not good entrepreneurs but most of them are actually trained to be workers and college education is not the only best route to being an entrepreneur.

Colleges tend to make graduates think in a similar way making different personality in people to change and think in uniform style not ready to meet the actual world, full of challenges; because of being highly trained it clones personality. Am not suggesting that we should not impress college education but there should be a nonconventional system of training which does not kill someone personality. Being street smart separates oneself from the crowd. It trains to compete in the real world rather than having the knowledge that will not make one face the real world. In the streets people are able to unlock some of the closed doors of business world depending on ones personality and where your talents work the best.

When it comes to the rates of earnings, the college educated is usually rated higher than the high school graduates whose salary varies over time. However the rate of return on investment in higher education is not enough to cater for all what was used while pursuing a college degree. Many corporations tend to employee only college graduates having the notion that without college education you cannot do something substantial. Therefore in terms of economic value the college educated are rated higher, as shown by the Census Bureau that during adult’s working life  high school graduates earn less than associate’s  and bachelor’s degree holders. The argument point here is the cost of college studies compared to the lifetime work of the street smart person does not have the same economic value. As one enrolls in a fulltime college, on the other hand a high school graduate will be familiarizing with the real world as he strives to earn a living.

A person may finish schooling sooner than he/she thought and you need to face all the challenges of the real world.  College educated normally has a lot of expectation to be absorbed in the world of jobs only to be disappointed later that they were not trained to automatically be employed. There are many who are not employed and most of them have opted to be inventive as the high school graduates have done hence being self employed. You need to have exceptional life’s ability of which cannot be obtained only from colleges and higher learning institution, but just face the real life experiences with your own born person
