Introduction
Communication is undoubtedly a vital element in the transfer of information from one individual to another. People therefore posses different communication skills that assist them to convey information from one person to the other. Chan ,(2002) highlights that the difference in communication skills arises due to differing personalities , interests, concerns, knowledge levels , viewpoints and backgrounds. This particular paper seeks to analyze my personal communication skills.
In order to analyze my communication skills I evaluated the manner in which I communicate to other people. This involves how I treat those I communicate to and the manner in which they respond to me during verbal and non verbal communication.
One proficient communication skills that I possess is my ability to listen. Communication is a two way process that requires both the sender and the receiver to be actively involved (Barker, 2013). Over the years, I took note of the fact that during verbal communication, most people want to be heard but they do not want to listen. Nevertheless, I personally developed the culture of listening to others while they air out their views. Based on the fact that my professional ambition is directed towards working with the human resource, there is a need for me to listen attentively in order to be able to deal effectively with employees in the workplace. However, although I am a good listener, there are gaps in my listening capabilities. One of them is that I find it difficult to listen to an individual for a long period of time. Consequently, there is a need for me to gain training on how to listen to other people without switching off during the conversation.
I am also an individual who speaks or communicates with clarity. This occurs both in verbal and non- verbal communication. For instance, when I use non verbal communication such as sending an email, I always ensure that the message I am sending is clear. As an individual aspiring to work with employees, as a Human resource manager , there is a need for clarity essentially when sending information to employees, for instance the memo’s sent to the workers should always be precise. The challenge that exists when trying to be precise during communication entails the choice of words to be used. The choice of words to bring out clear communication can sometimes be difficult. However, with more training on how to communicate to employees, I believe that I will have good knowledge on providing clear information.
Another skill that I possess is being persuasive. In many incidences it is appropriate to try and convince others that the information you’re providing is actually true or useful. Persuasive skills in communication usually involve the ability to guide others towards adopting the ideas, views and attitudes that one present to themêé6″orey, 1997). I always ensure that the information I give is able to direct the individual listening or reading to believe and embrace the message I provide. The approach I use to persuade other is through building rapport with them. Being persuasive will assist me to convince employees to work towards attaining the objectives of the organization However, the existing gap when it comes to being persuasive during communication involves the difficulty to connect emotionally to others. I however believe that. In order to advance my professional objective of being a Human resource manager, training on emotional intelligence is vital in order to enable me to connect emotionally to the employees, which will further enable me to persuade them effectively.
Conclusion
The above discussion has presented my personal communication skills which include the ability to listen , speaking and communicating with clarity and being persuasive .Based on the fact that I have the objective of working with employees in the future as a Human resource management , I believe that my communication skills will improve with more training.
