Compare and contrast identified similarities as well as differences in expected assessment across the childhood age groups
In all three stages, there is a difference with regards to the amount of guidance that is needed by each age group in addition to the level of independence that is expected. An analysis of positive and negative behaviors indicates that positive parenting is needed to support the child’s ability to successfully meet the goals of each developmental level. Positive parenting is built on respect for children and promotes mutual respect, in addition to helping develop self-esteem, inner discipline, self-confidence, and responsibility. All age groups require their parents to teach them in a positive manner in order to ensure that they are able to clean themselves properly, be healthy eat well, and are able to do many additional tasks independently and correctly. Ultimately, good parents serve as good role models It would benefit most parents to gain an understanding of normal child development so that they could determine an expectation of their child’s behaviors and correct the ones that do not seem appropriate for a particular developmental phase. It is important for parents to use positive reinforcement rather than punishments to see these expected behaviors.
Summarize how a nurse would handle physical assessments, examinations, education, and communication differently with children versus adults. Consider spirituality and cultural differences in your answer
Nurses are adequately prepared to care for children that are in need. Rather than beginning a physical assessment right away, nurses will always consult the parent first and allow the child the opportunity to enter a trusting relationship with the nurse. During the time, it is beneficial for the nurse to assess how the child and parent interact and react to different things, which allows a mental and developmental assessment to be conducted. While it is necessary to ease into the relationship with the child, it is also necessary to do this with the parent to an extent. It is important to determine the level of control the parent wishes to have in the relationship and then to allow this provided it doesn’t interfere with the child’s health. The parent and the child should be consulted to receive health information, although the information provided by the parent is generally more accurate and should therefore be trusted to a greater extent. The parent should serve as a partner to help their child get the care they need and the nurse needs to work to facilitate this relationship. It is important to consider the spirituality and culture of both the child and the parent because this will help strengthen the relationship. When a nurse demonstrates an understanding of these factors, he or she is more likely to connect more deeply with the parent and child, which will lead to greater care. Ultimately, nurses are expected to understand diverse religions and cultures to ensure that communication with patients and their parents are maximally effective (Ahmann, 2002).
