In both poems “I Love the Sea,” and “Yara, Be Nice To Me” love was a common theme as was loss and forgiveness. Love is spoken about alongside sacrifice and the focus on personal identity is also present in both poems.

Song is something that’s important in both poems. In “I Love the Sea,” song or the act of singing, is seen by referencing the sky. In the line “with eyes that sing,” meaning that the sky has eyes that sing just as the object of the speaker’s affection has. The word song is also in “Yara,” as the speaker confesses that without the object of their desire, they would not be able to sing; thus, love lets them sing; almost as if love is a song just like in the first poem. Both poems, say how love is like song in some way.           In both poems eyes are important. In “Yara,” the speaker says that they would give their eyes to their loved one; meaning they would sacrifice their sight in order for the other one to see. In “I Love the Sea,” the speaker says that the sky has eyes, and that candles wept. This means that there was great loss in the speaker and the lover. Eyes are related to loss in both poems: a willing loss of sight, and a loss of love/friendship as seen with personifying the candles as weeping.

Both poems speak about love and the lover either with comparison to earthly or celestial elements, or through speaking about what the speaker is willing to sacrifice for the lover. Despite the poems’ differences the underlining theme of love is prevalent and runs a common chord between both works.
