Ted Talks Review: Andy Puddicombe: All It Takes is 10 Mindful Minutes

In the speech, Andy Puddicombe talks about the power of meditation and its benefits for humans’ way of thinking about their lives. The below analysis is going to reveal the strengths and shortfalls of the speech based on the rhetorical analysis.

Ethos

The speaker builds a sense of credibility through telling people about his life and how he learned meditation by becoming a monk. He, however, does not  mention any studies and experiments he took part in, and refers to one article published on the topic. His credibility is somewhat low, however, he seems authentic when speaking of first hand experiences.

Pathos

Andy Puddicombe talks about his life and experiences, and issues people can relate to, such as tooth pain or being overwhelmed by thoughts. He talks about confusion, anxiety, and the causes of them. He makes some remarks about his problems and experience with stress, so he tells the audience that he became a monk to study meditation. He does make an emotional connection with the audience through explaining how anxiety works, and it is evident that most people can relate to the experience.

Logos

While the reasoning of the speaker is clear, he does not make clear connection between meditation and the clarity of thought. He suggests that when people do stop being overwhelmed by distracting thoughts, they would think clearer, however, he fails to explain the process in detail. He does not use any visual aids to draw up connection between meditation, anxiety level, and success. However, his demonstration of the issue using juggling balls is
