The growing interest over how computers redefine the concept of learning among academic students have become a common theme of discussion in most computer-innovation forums. The creation of computers was expected to increase the competence of students to perform in class. However, when it comes to utilizing laptops in note-taking in classrooms, there is another issue to consider. Observably, academic experts have found out that the utilization of laptops in class have affected the learning progress of students dramatically. According to the report of Mueller (et al, 2014) entitled The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking, students utilizing laptops for note taking have lesser concentration on class than those who use the traditional pen and paper approach. The psychological impact of actually using the pen and paper apparently affects the capacity of the brain to function accordingly with the coordination of the hands. Notably, this indicates that as the brain works to dictate to the hands what should be written in the paper, the brain automatically reserves the information for future reference.
Another article focused on computer innovation specifically goes against the common notion that good robots ought to be complicated and specifically complex in design. Copying the operational procedures taken into account by animals as they exist within a functioning ecosystem, the innovators began to understand that simplicity is still the key to functional robotics. According to Gauci’s (et al, 2014) report on simple robotics, such aspect of simplicity surpasses the modern complex computer setups that are usually undergo system debugging operations when they collapse. According to this research, the simplistic form of designing smaller robotics entail to perform at a better pace due to the fact that the robots are expected to respond to one specific function alone hence making it easier for the robot to complete tasks as required.
These two articles were chosen to be reviewed and presented in this discussion because they both provide information that is apart from the common knowledge of the society regarding computers, their effect in the society and the way they are supposed to be developed to create better convenience to human users. For one, the first article proved that the traditional way of note taking still encompasses the technological approach of completing the said task. The second article on the other hand provides a distinct opposition to complex robotics for function which is a good source of information for those aiming to develop properly functioning robotics.
As for me, I am more inclined to learning more about what the first article has to say about note taking and the psychology behind writing on paper versus typing words into the keyboard. Relatively, as a student, this topic speaks more to me as it does affect my personal understanding on the role of computers in my own process of learning. As a student, I use both laptop and paper to take notes. With this article, I understood why those lessons I took through pen and paper actually stick to my head rather than those I took notes with using the computer. This article has been very helpful to me in determining what aspect of procedural learning I should take into account to make sure that my process would allow me to learn more from what I am able to write about.
Considerably, these articles provided me with new found information that proves that computers need not be the primary elements that control nor direct our lives. Us humans should still be the ones to take control of our activities, our lives and our concept of development. Being fully dependent on what computers provide would render our capacities weak and specifically daunting especially in providing us with the greatest source of competence we can advance with.
