Computer Security Systems, Essay Example

Essay

Many Doctors in hospitals share common access terminals in hospitals. This at times can create issues when not properly logging out of the system. There are two features that could help to mitigate this risk.

Automatic Timed Logout

Once the system detects that there has been no keyboard activity for greater that 10 seconds it automatically logs off the account it was logged into. This will require the new user to log on via entering the secure password combination. The system could also send a message to the systems administrator that on account # XXXXX the user failed to log off properly so the session was shut down. Repeat offenders could be issued a written reminder of the security protocols that should be adhered to as part of the Hospitals Rules and Regulations. (Gollmann, 2011)

Modification in Programing

When a doctor assigns drugs or medications to a patient. The system performs a background check to see that the doctor’s i.d. matches the appropriate patient’s id. If this does not match the system issues an alert to the screen. And locks the screen and keyboard preventing any further access to the system. An emergency alert is also sent to the system administrator of the mismatch and system action taken. The system administrator can unfreeze the program by entry of an encrypted security number.

Security controls are a vital part of any computer system. They need to be continuously inspected and enhanced where problems or deficiencies are notified. Sometimes this has to be accomplished as damage control / limitation but in most cases issues can be avoided by having a well-crafted systems security policy. All breaches in security need to be investigated and appropriate remedial action taken. (Seymour Bosworth, 2012)
