Conflict Resolution in the Workplace Guide, Essay Example

Essay

Major changes that have occurred in my work situation primarily involve the fact that staff has changed significantly and it has been challenging for employees to build meaningful relationships with new workers. Since health care is a fast-paced environment, we grow accustomed to our coworkers and feel that it is easier to work with them as a consequence. People reacted negatively when the staff was replaced several times because they were concerned that it would be too challenging to adapt to a new team. Some new employees believed themselves to be superior to individuals with more seniority. Staff members were not informed of these changes in advance. Rumors indicated that many people left our team to work for a job with higher compensation. A conflict that I had faced with a new coworker as a consequence of the change is that she approached me as if she was my manager due to experience she had at another hospital, but she did not have seniority in this location. She tried to hand me responsibilities that were not required for me to complete. To resolve this conflict, I reported the problem to my manager, who addressed the team concerning responsibilities and seniority. After this encounter, the conflict was resolved.

Next, it is important to consider nursing workload has increased as a consequence of modern health care conditions, which has contributed to this change. Since hospitals do not typically have a significant amount of funding, there are quick turnover rates and the hospital is not well staffed. It is likely that old workers became tired of the long hours they were constantly asked to work and had a hard time balancing work requirements with family life. This did not impact my role in a significant way, although it advanced my seniority compared to other employees. I did not have the opportunity to participate in how the changes were carried out because this is not my role. These were not necessarily sound changes for me personally because it felt harder to work with new colleagues. Over time, this became a learning experience, but there was a major barrier to care during the adjustment phase. The changes were not necessarily good for most nurses, the patients, or the hospital. Because of these changes, I am more prepared for future staff shifting and am beginning to feel better about these changes going forward (Dale Carnegie Training, n.d.). Overall, I learned that it is necessary to cope with change as time goes on because this will bring better benefit to the patients we serve.
