Culture in School Environment, Reaction Paper Example

The chapter argues that school cultures should evolve to accommodate the growing diversity of students as well as locate more resources to planning and monitoring. They should set goals, allocate adequate resources, monitor the progress, and evaluate the implementation. Even though school culture is made up of both observable and non-observable traits but the management can significantly shape the culture through explicit guidance and policies. Quality of education can also be improved through various measures such as delegating more responsibilities to subordinates by the school management and reducing class sizes. Reduced class sizes all instructors to give more individual attention to the students and also increase participation by each student in the class.

This information has made me realize the importance of planning and controlling. Schools need to become more accountable for their performance and institute a system of tracking progress. This will help the management and the teachers learn what works and what doesn’t and modify their behavior accordingly. Similarly, when teachers will be given more responsibility and authority, they will be more motivated to work harder as well as provide feedback to improve school performance.

While I agree with most of the suggestions but in my opinion, they cannot be effectively implemented without making some modifications. In order to deal with diverse student population, there may be need to introduce new teaching styles or take customized approach to teach to meet the needs of different students. Students with special needs have different learning styles, thus, accommodations would need to be provided. In addition, the teachers should be provided incentives to take on more responsibilities and show improved performance otherwise they will just feel overworked.
