Creative Essay

Daisy paused in the middle of the room. She had been looking for the hairpin for the past 20 minutes. When was the last time she wore it? She couldn’t remember. Her eyes wandered the small space and settled on her dresser. With a sigh she walked over and opened the top drawer again.

Daisy rummaged through her dresser. She had other hairpins, but none as special as this one. The way the flowers lay, matching the curve of her head exact and cascading down her hair, it was as though it had been made just for her. Daisy paused as she imagined the slow smile of his that would grow until it reached his eyes when he saw her tonight. They were to meet at his club and she would sneak out after well after her parents were asleep. She frowned. Daisy didn’t like lying to them, but what could she do?

She remembered the day her aunt had bought the hairpin. The day had been rainy, but her aunt had to leave soon and she insisted they would have their day together. As they dodged the raindrops from stall to stall in the marketplace, her aunt had pointed out the sparkle in the puddles and the patterns the raindrops made as they cascaded down the wood. She had seen the way Daisy looked at the hairpin and insisted she have this object of beauty.

Daisy got down on all fours and looked under her bed. There, beneath the headboard was the pin. Triumphantly she went to the mirror and placed it in her hair, admiring how the flowers lay on her hair. “That is beautiful in your hair, Daisy. Didn’t my sister buy that for you?” Daisy started slightly as her mother entered the room.

“Yes. When she gave it to me, she told me to always look for beauty and when I find it, to follow it with all my heart.” Her mother kissed the top of her head.

“That’s good advice. Dinner in an hour, time for schoolwork, yes?” Daisy nodded and looked back at the mirror as her mother left the room. But instead of her face, she saw his. That was beauty, she thought.
