Dance Activity, Essay Example

Essay

As a person who loves to dance, there are activities that I enjoy in my free time that complement my dance-related interests. While I certainly like practicing my “normal” dance routines and areas of interest, it is nice to do some other things. However, even when I’m not doing my normal dance moves, I particularly enjoy working out along the lines of dance.

Many of these items are actually quite popular. Dance-based workout videos have become a trend. When you consider how convenient they are, allowing many people to forget about the gym, it is natural that they have captured a great deal of attention. Also, they are a fun take on exercising, and for many, beat running or walking on a treadmill, for instance. You can’t beat the price, convenience, and fun.

Dance/Exercise Interests

It is in this general field where I find a number of dance activities that I enjoy. With so many choices, I never seem to get bored if I need to switch things up, with regard to the difference videos that are out there. For instance, there are hip hop, jazz, Latin, tap, and other types of dances that are reflected in exercise-based videos. Others, such as Zumba and various popular series are common as well.

For me, this is only part of the appeal. As someone who truly loves dance, though, I find that these videos are the perfect way to get some “normal” exercise while enjoying dance. Hence, I can stay in shape while experiencing a number of things that I might not have experienced. I find it quite fun and immersive.

The previous sentences bring up one of the most important things for me: variety. Sometimes when I’m involved in dancing, it can become cumbersome to stay interested in the task at hand. This doesn’t happen often, but I find that doing other dance-related activities can help spark my interest again.

Thus, a simple change of pace can often improve my outlook. When I hit a plateu in my progress – or interest level – in my normal dance activities, I find myself engaging in these videos. Sometimes it’s exactly what I need to immerse myself in something else, while staying active.

Benefits

One of the biggest benefits for me is the same of most everyone else: staying in shape. Sometimes I need a break from my normal dance interests, and want a change of pace. With these videos, I am able to stay fit.

Additionally, I find that these exercise programs benefit my normal dance routines. For instance, as they are different types of dance, they force me to move in different ways, allowing my muscles to find some variety. Thus, I often find that it helps me practice different ways to move, making me more versatile.

These benefits are quite important. In conventional sports, many athletes go outside of their chosen sport to others, to cross train. For instance, a lineman on a football team may take up boxing to improve his footwork. As an analogy, that is kind of how I see these dance videos. When I want a change of pace, or something to supplement my progress in dancing, I enjoy expanding my horizons. Thus, when I go into other types of dance, I am cross training – in a way – and experience the growth that comes with it. Aside from the physical benefits, it is mentally stimulating as well. As elaborated upon in the analogy, I feel that it is important for someone to “cross train” – no matter what they are learning.

These benefits are found for anyone that enjoys these things. For instance, I often tell other people around me about such exercise videos. Even if someone is just interested in staying in shape, they can get something out of them. Others that enjoy dance, or even other sports, can certainly realize benefits from footwork and movements found in other disciplines (in dance, or other types of dance).

Conclusion

One dance activity that I enjoy in my free time is seen in exercise videos, which are based on a dance. Mentally, I find them to be fun and a nice break from my normal dance activities. It certainly is interesting to learn something new at the same time, giving me a break from what I normally do – but at the same time keeping up with my dance pursuits.

It is interesting that I find myself improving with these items. As they allow me to engage myself in other dance styles, I become a better all-around dancer. I am able to see physical benefits that improve me as a dancer, regardless of style. I am also better able to understand my normal routines, I believe as these videos help me learn other dance-related movements and routines.

These videos certainly represent an area in dance that I enjoy in my free time. I feel that anyone who loves dance should find ways to dance that fall a little outside of the norm. Just like an athlete cross trains or a writer reads other’s work, so too can other dancing activities improve a dancer. These videos allow me to stay in shape, pursue my dance-related interests, and find a nice change of pace.
