“Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, Book Review Example

Pages: 1

Words: 260

Book Review

Death of a Salesman is respectively one of the best American plays that has ever been written. This story incorporates love and pride, betrayal and friendship. The main character, Williams Loma, is an old salesman who struggles in the unforgiving world of modern business, having his own family – wife Linda and two sons, Biff and Harold. After reading the novel, I had a feeling that all these events actually happened on a theatrical stage with all of the lighting effects, character themes and background, thus I think it is interesting and unique. Arthur Miller presented all the events in great detail, indulging the readers to the world of a salesman, Willy Loman. Even the dialogs seem like real conversations between real people, and not just made up writing. The way Miller depicted the story and its characters, takes your imagination to their world, in their house to witness major episodes and conversations. In order to fully comprehend the story, one has to have a wide imagination and good understanding of the consequences of each and every event, for the main character has his own psychological case in which he hallucinates talking to non-existing people. All in all, Arthur Miller makes a great job conveying the emptiness and meaninglessness of his own protagonist’s life. However, I would definitely enjoy seeing this play performed in person on stage, instead of simply reading the script, for it would be completely different experience for me. This novel can be considered a classical American tragedy, presented as an antithesis to the clinched American dream.
