Case Study

Career development is an issue that the employee should care for and look after. It is the responsibility of the employee to look after his career development. Organization should be responsible for giving out the support as well as opportunities for growth to employees. Sun Microsystems Inc. was founded in 1982 by around four people in their 20s. Sun’s products usually range from workstations and servers to software services (Jack 57).

The Sun’s approach to the development of employees is a commitment that is long term. This ensures that there is continuous and improvement in that process. The primary support resource for career development within employees is called career services. The approach that is current developed from first career center that opened at Sun in 1991. Its main focus was on the manufacturing area and on equipping the employees in dealing proactively with the redeployment.  The center provided the employees with career counseling while building the concept of the employees towards taking their own career direction. After 18 months, the centers focus and its counseling moved firmly to ongoing career management. After sometimes, the center moved to Human resource department where it continued to deliver services in its career action center. The services were broadened in that its services were offered at multiple locations of the sun around the Silicon Valley.

Its main activities changed from items like the creation of resume to giving support to the individuals towards exploring their career aspirations. These services included the development of plans aided in the assessment workshops and instruments.  The career services evolution increased the number of counseling sessions that were available so as to benefit employees.  Counselors were dispersed at different Silicon Valley facilities and another at east coast. Today, the Sun’s career services are designed to help the employees in making career choices which they are well aware of. With those services, they are able to match their aspirations to the opportunities within Sun. These services have enabled the development of career within Sun organization and improvement of their services (Rona & Seema).
