Annotated Bibliography

Basso, R., & Pelech, W. (2008a). A creative arts intervention for children with diabetes: Part 1: Development. Journal of Psychosocial Nursing & Mental Health Services, 46(10), 25-29. Retrieved from Research Library. (1567873091)

This article discusses the innovative use of artistic expression as a means of helping children cope with type 1 or juvenile diabetes, which is a chronic, debilitating illness. This source would be useful in my literature review because the description of the program methodology used allows for recreation of the model in other settings and offers practical suggestions for beginning a creative arts skits program.

Basso, R., & Pelech, W. (2008b). A creative arts intervention for children with diabetes: Part 2: Evaluation. Journal of Psychosocial Nursing & Mental Health Services, 46(12), 25-28. Retrieved from Research Library. (1608714731)

This article complements the previous one and is an evaluation of the importance of using creative arts skits as an expressive technique for children with Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes. This source would be useful in my literature review because the details provided by this trial intervention indicates that such measures, implemented in a continuing care context, had a positive impact on the children’s lives.

Downie, E., Craig, M., Hing, S., Cusumano, J., Chan, A., & Donaghue, K. (2011). Continued reduction in the prevalence of retinopathy in adolescents with type 1 diabetes: Role of insulin therapy and glycemic control. Diabetes Care, 34(11), 2368-2373. Retrieved from Research Library. (2516969881)

This is an Australian study that discusses the occurrence of microvascular complications in 1,604 adolescents with type 1 diabetes between 1990 and 2009 and details the prevalence of these complications, duration of the disease, and causes of such complications. This source would be useful in my literature review because it demonstrates successful management regimes and how to reduce the prevalence of negative outcomes for adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Factors predictive of severe hypoglycemia in Type 1 Diabetes: Analysis from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation continuous glucose monitoring randomized control trial dataset. (2011). Diabetes Care, 34(3), 586-590. Retrieved from Research Library. (2291810591)

This study identifies factors indicative of severe hypoglycemia (SH) and examines the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to warn of its onset in a randomized clinical trial sample of 436 children and adults with type 1 diabetes. This source would be useful in my literature review because it supports the importance and value of home blood glucose monitoring, but it has limited usability because the participants included adults.

Grose, S. (2007). Australia set to test insulin ‘vaccine’ for juvenile diabetes. Nature Medicine, 13(2), 111. Retrieved from Research Library. (1217381041)

This study discusses the nature of the disease juvenile diabetes. The delivery of insulin through the nose is discussed and is considered as a superior treatment option, which is why this source would be useful in my literature review.

Harjutsalo, V., Sjöberg, L., & Tuomilehto, J. (2008). Time trends in the incidence of type 1 diabetes in Finnish children: a cohort study. The Lancet, 371(9626), 1777-82. Retrieved from Research Library. (1498951621)

This article discusses the prevalence of type 1 diabetes in a total of 10,737 Finnish children under the age of 15 diagnosed with diabetes between 1980 and 2005 as well as the propensity of new cases in the future. This source would be useful in my literature review because it provides statistical details regarding the incidences of the disease amongst the various age groups of children afflicted, which helps in developing treatment and prevention programs.

Insel, R., Deecher, D., & Brewer, J. (2012). Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: Mission, strategy, and priorities. Diabetes, 61(1), 30-35. Retrieved from Research Library. (2574576231)

This article details the mission, strategy, priorities, and accomplishments of the JDRF to date and also discusses their current research programs and progress. This will be a good addition to my literature review because it also talks about the goals of the JDRF and how the accomplishment of these goals can help children with juvenile diabetes.

Jeffery, A., Metcalf, B., Hosking, J., Streeter, A., Voss, L., & Wilkin, T. (2012). Age before stage: Insulin resistance rises before the onset of puberty: A 9-year longitudinal study (EarlyBird 26). Diabetes Care, 35(3), 536-41. Retrieved from Research Library. (2607195921)

This article examines the relationship between insulin resistance and the onset of puberty in children with juvenile diabetes, which is relative to the treatment plans, options, and overall knowledge of juvenile diabetes and would be relevant to my literature review.

Maayan-Metzger, A., Lubin, D., & Kuint, J. (2009). Hypoglycemia rates in the first days of life among term infants born to diabetic mothers. Neonatology, 96(2), 80-85. Retrieved from Research Library. (1839755941)

This article discusses the risk factors for newborns born to diabetic mothers to develop hypoglycemia and to characterize the rates of glucose concentrations in the first two days of life, which is relevant to literature review because infants born large or to mothers with juvenile diabetes mellitus are at higher risk of developing the disease and should be closely monitored.

Manivannan, C. (2009). Juvenile diabetes mellitus. Nursing Journal of India, 100(2), 40-42. Retrieved from ProQuest Health and Medical Complete. (1791906601)

This article discusses the overall demographics, knowledge, and attitude of the typical caregiver of youth with juvenile diabetes and how these attributes relate to the affected child and their successful management of the disease. This is relevant to my literature review because it provides significant details regarding the importance of these factors to health outcomes.

Nierras, C., Atkinson, M., & Goldstein, R. (2010). The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at forty: Updates of research in Type 1 Diabetes. Diabetes, 59(7), 1575-1577. Retrieved from Research Library. (2092567401)

This article provides an update on the progress the JDRF has made in the four decades since its founding and is relevant to my literature review because it supplements article #7 (Insel) that also discusses the commitment of the JDRF to cure juvenile diabetes.

Pell, G. et al. (2012). Age-related loss of brain volume and T2 relaxation time in youth with type 1 diabetes. Diabetes Care, 35(3), 513-519. Retrieved from Research Library. (2607195881)

This article examines the brain tissue health of children with juvenile diabetes and how this affects their overall health, including the age in which the disease manifested. This is relevant to my literature review because it demonstrates a negative correlation between healthy brain development and juvenile diabetes.
