Essay

Premise:

Paul and Marta were married in the past. They decided to go separate ways after knowing that they would not be able to bear any children due to medical reasons on the part of Paul. Marta did not want to let go at first but Paul’s indifference towards her pushed her away. They see each other in an elevator after three years of not seeing and speaking to each other:

Paul: Hey… Hi….

Marta: Oh! Hi… funny I should bump into you in the elevator… (Long pause)…Where are you headed?

Paul: Ummm… I am applying for an opening in the company on the tenth floor

Marta: oh really? (long pause) I work there you know?

Paul: Really? At least I know there would be one friendly face in the crowd…. (Grins a little)

Marta: (Smiling) don’t be so sure about that…

Paul: (staring blankly at Marta trying to understand what she meant)

Marta: Don’t worry.. it was a joke.. I do not have the power to hire or fire in the company, I’m just an accountant (smiles)

Paul: How have you been lately?

Marta: You mean after three years? I guess I’m fine…

Paul: I really should not be asking for this, but would you be free tonight for a coffee at least?

Marta: I’ll try to see. Drop by my office after your interview and then we’ll talk. I’m at room 203. Just pass by there before you go out.

Paul: Great! Thanks a lot.. I’d be dropping by.

While it did take a lot of strength to get it out of his system, Paul really wanted to see how Marta is. After all, they have been married once. Perhaps there is a chance to rebuild what was lost. For now, it is just friendship that Paul hopes to establish. He knows that Marta already has her own life and he does not want to ruin any of it, he just wants to be part of it again.
