Research Paper

Roma Empire became the first empire to face dictatorship in history. This happened amid various attempts by the Republic to establish social reforms in the empire. It began with Gaius Marius and Cornelius Sulla who got the support of the military, overthrew the government, and set a trend that saw other coup de tats happen in Rome. Gnaeus Pompeus, Licinius Crassus, and Julius Caesar took over the empire in 60BC throw a renowned coup that led to the formation of The First Triumvirate. The triumvirate agreement ensured that the three had territories that they led and command at their own personal benefits. After the death of Gnaeus Pompeus and Licinius Crassus, Julius Caesar took over the entire Rome and met his death after a planned assassination by citizens who yearned for the return of democracy. Octavian took over from his father and gave back some fundamental powers to the Senate, thus marking a return for democracy (Lintott 110).

Dictatorship is an undesired act that denies the majority of their rights and serves the few military men rather than the entire population. The leaders, picked by the military, served at the interest of the few sliders and oppressed the majority. Dictatorship, therefore, derails developments and hinders democracy of the majority.

The value of supremacy of the Roman Empire over the world, founded by Cicero conflicts his second value that ensured liberty for the citizens. Citizens of the Roman Empire who were promise liberty were under the subjection of the empire, which was supreme and full of dictatorship. However, the two values strengthened each other, in that, they achieved liberty from other emperors that sought to oppress the Roman Empire (Brennan 38-43).
